FROM THE NEW YORK TIMES: Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen, the principals of DreamWorks, have privately expressed anger over the film, said an executive close to the two men. The chairmen of two other major studios said they would avoid working with Mr. Gibson because of "The Passion of the Christ" and the star's remarks surrounding its release. Neither of the chairmen would speak for attribution, but as one explained: "It doesn't matter what I say. It'll matter what I do. I will do something. I won't hire him. I won't support anything he's part of. Personally that's all I can do."
In other words, Mel Gibson will be blacklisted by the very same people who are still crying and wailing about the so-called "blacklisting" of fifty years ago. In that case, however, the people who were prevented from working (the sainted "Hollywood 10") were card-carrying communists who called for the overthrow of America.
I can't remember studio heads complaining about Oliver Stone's worship of Castro; Steven Spielberg's pilgrimage to Cuba for an audience with the supremo leader (which he called "the most important eight hours of my life.") But heaven forbid, no pun intended, that someone make an overtly religious film.
While not personally a member of the flock, I hope this movie takes in 150 million dollars .... if only because Hollywood, the major media, and academia look upon religious Americans with such disgust and disdain.

Something's really in the air.
Bullets, maybe? The culture war sure has gone from cold to hot.

The libs are running scared over "The Passion". It has scared liberals because the discussion of morality brought up by this movie could very well expose what a bunch of militant secularists (and possibly nihilists) this crowd really is. It could very well affect the outcome of the 2004 Presidential election, too.

Recall that producer Michael Ovitz once claimed that Hollywood is now dominated by a "Gay Mafia" of which Geffen is the leader. I read an article once which stated that Geffen often demands sodomy during auditions. The casting couch does have a long and dishonored history in Hollywood, though at one time only actresses had to worry about a filmmaker's dishonorable intentions.

Did you see what Robert Duvall said about Spielberg's visit to Cuba? What did he say?

Dreamworks doesn't like the movie. Their control of the media is slipping away. Left up to Hollywierd, all we would ever see is trashy, violent, meaningless, semi-pornographic tripe. Hollywood is trying to turn America into the Weimar Republic. But when they tried to attack "the Passion of the Christ" they went too far. They got called on it. And that really burns their buns.

Has anyone considered voter registration booths at showings of "the passion"? That is a brilliant idea.

Forget wailing about the blacklist of 50 years ago. What about the so called black list they were wailing about just recently when they all protested the upcoming war in Iraq and then bemoaned that it was going to be McCarthy time all over again. In the latter case it was your everyday average Joe who was refusing to buy their crap after they slammed our country and President. Afterall, we had no right to stop seeing their movies or write letters to the companies that hired them. I'm with Horowitz--only I hope Mel's movie makes $200 million.

I second that--it is a brilliant idea. You know the leftists would really be cheesed at that. I think we should all get FreeRepublic.com shirts made up as well and wear them to the theatre.

Shameful. They've shown their true colors.

I really do think this film will have an impact on the presidential election.
Christian conservatives who stayed home in 2000 may be inspired by the resurgence of Christianity effectuated by "The Passion". I am sure the film will be shown in little theaters and in Church halls right up until November (and well beyond). It may become a rallying point, to turn back the tide of filth and degradation the media have been spewing out for three decades now.
No wonder the libs are scurrying about like the rats they are, trying to demean both the film and Mr.Gibson.

Don't compare McCarthy, a great American and a Christian with these two boobs.
Everytime I start wondering if manybe this flim is too gory, or maybe it anti-Semitic, or maybe Gibson is a little wacky, some miserable little liberal hypocritical worm comes crwling out from under the wood work and sets me straight.
Thanks Katzenberg and Geffin - you changed my mind once again, you two pieces of putrid Hollyweird elite garbage.

"It doesn't matter what I say. It'll matter what I do. I will do something. I won't hire him. I won't support anything he's part of. Personally that's all I can do." At last, the culture war has been joined! It is moving out into the open, which is a good thing (IMO).
Personally, I find it interesting that these two guys are threatening to "cut off" Mel Gibson from Hollywood -- right after Gibson has demonstrated in no uncertain terms that he doesn't need guys like these anyway -- not to hire him as an actor or director, not to make his films, not to distribute his films, etc.

I bet that the real reason behind their anger is that Mel circumvented the traditional bootlicking channels to get his film made and distributed. Now that it's on its way to an $80-100 million first weekend, and maybe $200million or more total domestic, it just burns them up.
The suits think its 1935 and they are Jack Warner or Sam Goldwyn. Truth is they have a lot of power, but nowhere near the power that the Hollywood Titans of old weilded.

Limbaugh said something on his radio show earlier about Katzenberg denying the NYT story. Mewzilla, I read somewhere yesterday (here I think) that Geffen and Katzenberg are both "backing away" from the statements that were attributed to them, on the grounds that "they hadn't seen the film, so can't comment on it," or words to that effect. All the same, these two cannot be happy campers about Gibson's extraordinary achievement -- and incredible success. He made back virtually his entire investment in the film's first day of release.
I guess we'll really find out what Hollywood thinks of Mel's Passion at the Oscars, next year.

I do think that's what this is mostly about. Mel circumvented the traditional hollywood channels to make a movie. Not only that, he made a blockbuster. This alone ticks off the old guard.

May our bravehearted Mel make enough money from this movie to have the biggest production company out there.
