Bob Dylan lyrics: "Property of Jesus" (must read for Mel Gibson fans)
Shot of Love ^ | 1981 | Bob Dylan

Posted on 02/24/2004 10:40:57 PM PST by Behind Liberal Lines

Go ahead and talk about him because he makes you doubt, Because he has denied himself the things that you can't live without. Laugh at him behind his back just like the others do, Remind him of what he used to be when he comes walkin' through.

He's the property of Jesus Resent him to the bone You got something better You've got a heart of stone

Stop your conversation when he passes on the street, Hope he falls upon himself, oh, won't that be sweet Because he can't be exploited by superstition anymore Because he can't be bribed or bought by the things that you adore.

He's the property of Jesus Resent him to the bone You got something better You've got a heart of stone

When the whip that's keeping you in line doesn't make him jump, Say he's hard-of-hearin', say that he's a chump. Say he's out of step with reality as you try to test his nerve Because he doesn't pay no tribute to the king that you serve.

He's the property of Jesus Resent him to the bone You got something better You've got a heart of stone

Say that he's a loser 'cause he got no common sense Because he don't increase his worth at someone else's expense. Because he's not afraid of trying, 'cause he don't look at you and smile, 'Cause he doesn't tell you jokes or fairy tales, say he's got no style.

He's the property of Jesus Resent him to the bone You got something better You've got a heart of stone

You can laugh at salvation, you can play Olympic games, You think that when you rest at last you'll go back from where you came. But you've picked up quite a story and you've changed since the womb. What happened to the real you, you've been captured but by whom?

He's the property of Jesus Resent him to the bone You got something better You've got a heart of stone

This song is from Dylan's "born again" phase.

Say what you will about Dylan's leftie politics on other songs, but this one perfectly captures the sick contempt that liberals feel for Mel Gibson and other devout Christians.

Dylan has an record called "Saved," which is pretty good. Even Bowie has a religious phase; see his "hymn" called Word on a Wing:

In this age of grand illusion you walked into my life out of my dreams
I don't need another change, still you forced away into my scheme of things
You say we're growing, growing heart and soul
In this age of grand illusion you walked into my life out of my dreams
Sweet name, you're born once again for me
Sweet name, you're born once again for me
Oh sweet name, I call you again, you're born once again for me
Just because I believe don't mean I don't think as well
Don't have to question everything in heaven or hell

Lord, I kneel and offer you my word on a wing
And I'm trying hard to fit among your scheme of things
It's safer than a strange land, but I still care for myself
And I don't stand in my own light
Lord, lord, my prayer flies like a word on a wing
My prayer flies like a word on a wing
Does my prayer fit in with your scheme of things?

In this age of grand illusion you walked into my life out of my dreams
Sweet name, you're born once again for me
just as long as I can see, I'll never stop this vision flowing
I look twice and you're still flowing
Just as long as I can walk
I'll walk beside you, I'm alive in you
Sweet name, you're born once again for me
And I'm ready to shape the scheme of things

Ooh, ready to shape the scheme of things
Ooh, ready to shape the scheme of things
Ooh, ready to shape the scheme of things
Ooh, ready to shape the scheme of things
Ooh, ready to shape the scheme of things
Ooh...

Lord, I kneel and offer you my word on a wing
And I'm trying hard to fit among your scheme of things
It's safer than a strange land, but I still care for myself
And I don't stand in my own light
Lord, lord, my prayer flies like a word on a wing
And I'm trying hard to fit among your scheme of things
It's safer than a strange land, but I still care for myself
And I don't stand in my own light
Lord, lord, my prayer flies like a word on a wing
My prayer flies like a word on a wing
Does my prayer fit in with your scheme of things?

Ah get born, keep warm
Short pants, romance,
learn to dance
Get dressed, get blessed
Try to be a success
Please her, please him, buy gifts
Don't steal, don't lift
Twenty years of schoolin'
And they put you on the day shift
Look out kid
They keep it all hid
Better jump down a manhole
Light yourself a candle
Don't wear sandals
Try to avoid the scandals
Don't wanna be a bum
You better chew gum
The pump don't work
'Cause the vandals took the handles

There's still hope. Unlike Jim Morrison, who got up on stage and announced he cancelled his Subscription to the Resurrection, then died 2 weeks later...these guys are still alive and have a chance to return. I have heard neither one blaspheme the HS openly.

If you have good anti-virus software, you should download "Word on a Wing." Very inspiring song.

Chilling line. Very effective.

Uh, nice try, but Morrison sung this line, from "When the Music's Over" hundreds of times since it was first recorded in 1967. Your point is good, no need to get silly.

BOB DYLAN LYRICS

"Gotta Serve Somebody"

You may be an ambassador to England or France
You may like to gamble, you might like to dance
You may be the heavyweight champion of the world
You may be a socialite with a long string of pearls.

But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed
You're gonna have to serve somebody,
It may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody.

Might be a rock'n' roll adict prancing on the stage
Might have money and drugs at your commands, women in a cage
You may be a business man or some high degree thief
They may call you Doctor or they may call you Chief.

But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed
You're gonna have to serve somebody,
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody.

You may be a state trooper, you might be an young turk
You may be the head of some big TV network
You may be rich or poor, you may be blind or lame
You may be living in another country under another name.

But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes
You're gonna have to serve somebody,
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody.

You may be a construction worker working on a home
You may be living in a mansion or you might live in a dome
You might own guns and you might even own tanks
You might be somebody's landlord you might even own banks.

But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes
You're gonna have to serve somebody,
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody.

You may be a preacher with your spiritual pride
You may be a city councilman taking bribes on the side
You may be working in a barbershop, you may know how to cut hair
You may be somebody's mistress, may be somebody's heir.

But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes
You're gonna have to serve somebody,
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody.

Might like to wear cotton, might like to wear silk
Might like to drink whiskey, might like to drink milk
You might like to eat caviar, you might like to eat bread
You may be sleeping on the floor, sleeping in a king-sized bed.

But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed
You're gonna have to serve somebody,
It may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody.

You may call me Terry, you may call me Jimmy
You may call me Bobby, you may call me Zimmy
You may call me R.J., you may call me Ray
You may call me anything but no matter what you say.

You're gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed
You're gonna have to serve somebody,
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody.

Album: 'Saved'

In the Garden
By Bob Dylan

When they came for Him in the garden, did they know?
When they came for Him in the garden, did they know?
Did they know He was the Son of God, did they know that He was Lord?
Did they hear when He told Peter, "Peter, put up your sword"?
When they came for Him in the garden, did they know?
When they came for Him in the garden, did they know?

When He spoke to them in the city, did they hear?
When He spoke to them in the city, did they hear?
Nicodemus came at night so he wouldn't be seen by men
Saying, "Master, tell me why a man must be born again."
When He spoke to them in the city, did they hear?
When He spoke to them in the city, did they hear?

When He healed the blind and crippled, did they see?
When He healed the blind and crippled, did they see?
When He said, "Pick up your bed and walk, why must you criticize?
Same thing My Father do, I can do likewise."
When He healed the blind and crippled, did they see?
When He healed the blind and crippled, did they see?

Did they speak out against Him, did they dare?
Did they speak out against Him, did they dare?
The multitude wanted to make Him king, put a crown upon His head
Why did He slip away to a quiet place instead?
Did they speak out against Him, did they dare?
Did they speak out against Him, did they dare?

When He rose from the dead, did they believe?
When He rose from the dead, did they believe?
He said, "All power is given to Me in heaven and on earth."
Did they know right then and there what that power was worth?
When He rose from the dead, did they believe?
When He rose from the dead, did they believe?
When He rose from the dead, did they believe?
When He rose from the dead, did they believe?

He said, "All power is given to Me in heaven and on earth."
Did they know right then and there what that power was worth?
When He rose from the dead, did they believe?
When He rose from the dead, did they believe?

Then of course there's Neil Young's dissenting viewpoint in "Soldier":

"Jesus, I saw you walkin' on the river
I don't believe you.
You can't deliver right away
I wonder why."

Say what you will about Dylan's leftie politics on other songs

Dylan's "anti-war leftie protest" period was very short, and 40 years ago. .....before we got involved in Vietnam, oddly enough. So, contrary to what many people think, he was not a Vietnam War protest singer. Once the war started Dylan was going electric with his groundbreaking Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde on Blonde, pure rock and roll albums both. ......songs about girls, cars, .....the usual. His lefist/folk crowd even considered him traitorous to their "cause," shouting "Judas" at him during many of the shows of the period (mid-60's).

But Dylan was undeterred, and was more than happy to distance himself from those freaks. In fact, whenever people/critics started to pigeonhole him as a practitioner of a certain style, Dylan invariably did a musical (and lyrical) about-face.

"Soldier" is one of Neil's best songs, which is to say one of the best songs period. (I like your username, btw ;) .....One can hear the fireplace crackling in the background during the recording of the song, which adds its already mystical mood.
