Bacteria Run Wild, Defying Antibiotics
By ABIGAIL ZUGER

Published: March 2, 2004

A new chapter in the continuing story of antibiotic resistance is being written in doctors' offices across the country, as a group of common bacteria rapidly becomes resistant to the antibiotics that have been used to treat them for decades.

The bacteria are called Staphylococcus aureus, or staph for short. Staph are the most common cause of skin infections like boils and can also cause lung infections, bloodstream infections and abscesses in the body's internal organs.

Coke's 95p water is out of the tap
manchesternews
Monday, 1st March 2004

SOFT drink giant Coca-Cola is selling purified tap water in a bottle, it emerged today.

The company confirmed the source for its new Dasani bottled water was the mains supply to its factory in Sidcup, Kent.

It said a "highly-sophisticated purification process" meant the product was "as pure as bottled water gets".

But the water industry said the product's implication was that tap is impure, which was not the case.

Coca-Cola is investing £7m in the British launch of Dasani as part of a worldwide expansion of the brand, which is already the second biggest-selling bottled water in the US.

Marketing for the product, which costs around 95p for a 500ml bottle, says water goes through a number of stages starting with three separate filters which take out "particles and organic debris" as well as chlorine.

The next stage, called reverse osmosis, is described as a technique perfected by Nasa to purify fluids.

The process uses high pressure to force the water through the fine membrane, removing "bacteria, viruses, salts, minerals, sugars, proteins and toxin particles".

Calcium, magnesium and sodium bicarbonate are then added for taste.

But Barrie Clarke, spokesman for UK Water, which represents suppliers, said: "People don't need to buy this stuff to get excellent quality, healthy water."

JP, that is CNN. That story is a little spun.

Louis Jodel Chamblain, 50, who fled to the Dominican Republic in 1994.

A former sergeant, he is accused taking part in a number of atrocities during the years of military rule.

He was suspected of involvement in a 1987 election massacre, in which 34 voters were killed and a civilian-run ballot aborted.

In 1993 in co-founded the Front for Haitian Advancement and Progress - Fraph, which sounds like "hit" in French.

The group is accused of killing thousands of supporters of Mr Aristide.

Mr Chamblain denies involvement in any paramilitary activities and describes himself as a "Haitian patriot".

It's a fascinating topic, with little in the way of hard answers.

With you being a ham radio person, what is your take on the UK info (credibility, etc.)?

Technically, everything was accurate as far as I know. But you don't have to be a ham to see that Muslims are flooding into the UK. It won't be very long before hey are in deep trouble because of it.

Oh well now, that's just lovely. You got me googling on the subject now. This article: Alazan Rockets has a reiteration of the article you posted in the first half. The second half has some hair-raising info as well.

The irony of it all is the the liberals are trying to say that Diebold is in the back pocket of the Republicans!

Just remember this one simple thing when you see stories like these:

Judge denies secrecy request in police-radio hacking case
By REID J. EPSTEIN
repstein@journalsentinel.com
Posted: Feb. 27, 2004
A federal judge in Madison denied a request Friday to keep secret testimony related to techniques possibly used to jam Madison police radio signals and replace them with the sounds of sex acts.

Motorola Inc., which makes the radio communications equipment for the Madison Police Department, asked that U.S. Magistrate Judge John C. Shabaz close the courtroom and seal the transcripts for any testimony from Motorola witnesses and from Rajib K. Mitra, the former University of Wisconsin-Madison graduate student charged with two counts of transmitting communications to a protected police computer.

Mitra, 25, a graduate of Brookfield East High School, faces up to 20 years in prison and a $500,000 fine if convicted. His trial begins Monday.

In a brief to the court on Motorola's behalf, Motorola's attorneys wrote that "access to the confidential information . . . would enable would-be copycats, hackers and even terrorists to access and disable the communications systems used by more than 8,000 First Responder systems worldwide, including the City of Madison Police Department. It is hard to imagine a more serious threat to our nation's security."

Mitra's Madison attorney, Chris Van Wagner, responded Friday with a brief saying that closing the courtroom would prejudice the jury against his client.

The closing of the courtroom, Van Wagner wrote, "will leave the jury with a clear sense that something about this man named Rajib Mitra (whose physical make-up and appearance are clearly consistent with those persons labeled terrorists with whom the current administration wages war) requires highly unusual and elaborate secrecy."

Van Wagner declined to comment Friday.

Steve Gorecki, a Motorola spokesman, said Friday that the company would dispatch two of its engineers to explain the radio technology to the court. He discounted the link to terrorism, saying Motorola is seeking to protect its copyrighted technology.

"It's a matter of protecting trade secrets and proprietary information that allows these public safety systems to work," Gorecki said.

Mitra faces charges in connection with incidents in Madison on the nights of Oct. 31 and Nov. 11. At 7:30 p.m. Oct. 31, police reported an incessant tone overriding their radio frequencies, rendering hand-held radios useless and leaving police unable to communicate with each other.

One officer was unable to call for first aid to help an injured person, Assistant U.S. Attorney Tim O'Shea said.

Three hours after the tone appeared, police radio technicians switched the department's frequency to a different channel. After 20 minutes, the tone followed, O'Shea said. The channel was switched again, but the tone did not follow until hours later. At 3:15 a.m., technicians switched the channel again, but the tone did not follow.

Police later traced the signals to N. Orchard St., where Mitra lived at the time.

On Nov. 11, police experienced another disruption. Audio clips of a woman moaning sounded on their frequencies 13 times during a nearly three-hour span, according to police records. After the signals were again traced to N. Orchard St., police obtained a search warrant for Mitra's apartment.

On Mitra's computer, officials found a Motorola wiring harness that, O'Shea said, is capable of transmitting radio frequencies. They also found several computers and papers listing all Madison police radio frequencies.

Mitra was released to his parents in Brookfield, who were ordered by U.S. Magistrate Judge Stephen L. Crocker to remove all but one of their home's computers and all unused electronic equipment.

Mitra's father, Samir, an anesthesiologist, was required to install a combination padlock on the door of his office, which holds the family's last remaining computer.

Crocker ordered Rajib Mitra to not use wireless or cellular phones, to not take apart any household appliances and not to use any device that could otherwise send or receive electronic messages.

This case is not the first time Rajib Mitra has been accused of computer crimes.

In 1998, he was convicted of hacking into the University of Iowa's computer systems while on probation for the same thing at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

In Multnomah County, Oregon (the county Portland is in), a county commissioner arbitrarily decided to allow same-sex marriages starting tomorrow. The local 10PM news is showing a line of people is starting to form at the county offices already.

Apparently, the commissioner didn't even consult the other commissioners. He just made the decision. I don't know how anyone can recognize this as legal. This is no better than a frickin dictatorship!

Deputies arrest stolen plane suspect

"He is extremely lucky," Deputy Chief Charles Wagner says.

That's what Brazoria County's deputy chief says about Louis Paul Kadlecek.

Kadlecek was arrested on third-degree felony burglary charges for breaking into the Brazoria County Airport Sunday morning, and stealing and then crashing a Cessna plane.

"This morning when the officer came to pick him up, he came out ready to go to jail," Wagner says.

The 21-year-old was taken into custody after a tip call from a viewer who saw his sketch on TV.

"We got lots of tips. We were able to identify a suspect, and get him arrested," Wagner says.

Kadlecek says he had been out drinking heavily Saturday, and decided to see if he could go for a joyride in a plane.

“He taxied one plane around the airport, just taking it on a ride around there. Brought it back, parked it. Got in this one and was just taxiing it around the airport when all of a sudden he said why not go for it, revved the engine up. When he thought it was revved up enough, he pulled back on it and it took off. Taking off's not that hard. It's getting back down that's the problem," Wagner says.

He had never flown before.

"Both planes had the manuals out on the front seat," Wagner says.

The incident calls into question the security at the local airport.

"It's very disturbing,” Wagner says. “We're meeting tomorrow morning to discuss security measures at the airport."

In addition to the third-degree felony burglary charge, the Brazoria County Sheriff's Department is looking into whether additional charges may be filed for the break-ins of those other hangars. The federal government is looking into whether they want to press charges as well.

Kadlecek is no stranger to the Brazoria County Sheriff's Department.

He has a long history of charges for theft, assault, drugs, DWI and stolen vehicles.

So far, he has not served any prison time for any of his crimes.

If convicted of the plane theft, he can receive two to 20 years in jail.

I will be filing a damages claim against her first thing tomorrow. I will than file a claim against FR for allowing obscene posts at FR.

I will then file a claim against the creators of the Internet since this was broadcast from the internet, which made me sick and allowed obscene material to circulate to my computer.

I will then file a lawsuit against the creators of Type, which allowed the material in question to be conveyed to me, which came to my computer that allowed me to read it.

I will then file a lawsuit agains the telecom that transmitted the message to my computer.

I will then.....

Below is my response to Velveetas post about the 4 Maldivian ""student pilots"" that made an unusual flight to a Texas city southwest of Dallas. It just dawned on me that the Presidents ranch is about 70 miles down the road from that little town.

Nationality: noun: Maldivian(s) Ethnic groups: South Indians, Sinhalese, Arabs Religions: Sunni Muslim Languages: Maldivian Dhivehi (dialect of Sinhala, script derived from Arabic),

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now, how did they rule out that these guys were not terrorists scoping out the area. Where was their regular pilot if they were students? From Maldives and they are ok??????

This letting people off the hook so easily is really getting to me. Why did they take off running when she said she was going to get a trooper? There's a lot of unanswered questions. Also the Maldives is a great place to learn how to scuba dive

FBI releases pilots after questioning (Texas)
By ANNA BOUDREAU
Staff Writer

Four men who landed an airplane in Stephenville Friday prompted law enforcement officers to investigate their suspicious actions, but the FBI freed them in Fort Worth following separate interrogations.

“Four males flew into our airport and left the airport using a golf cart to go to Hard 8 Barbecue to have lunch,” said Erath County Sheriff Tommy Bryant. “After lunch they went over to the DPS office and went into the driver’s license office to acquire about getting Texas identification cards.”

Bryant said the lady working in the driver’s license office became suspicious of the men because each had numerous passports and identification cards — something she learned in her training should indicate there might be trouble.(snipped...click link for rest of the article)
