A strong earthquake occurred at 02:27:46 (UTC) on Tuesday, February 24, 2004. The magnitude 6.5 event has been located in STRAIT OF GIBRALTAR. The hypocentral depth was poorly constrained. (This event has been reviewed by a seismologist.)

Very strange location for an earthquake, let alone a 6.5.

It's not that weird. Remember that Lisbon was once destroyed by an earthquake. It became an event in Voltaire's "Candide."

If I remember correctly, a fault line runs right through the Strait of Gibraltar. Also, much of the Med is very seismically active with dozens of volcanoes and regular earthquakes.

The straits got just a little wider today.

The trend is the other way, towards shuting out the Atlantic and the Med to evaporate, like it once did a long time ago.
