Homeschooled Daughter Earns Full Scholarship to Graduate School at University of Cincinnati (vanity)
Self | 22 Feb 04 | SLB

I have to brag about this one. As most FReeprs know, we have five children and home school. One daughter is a Senior at Georgetown College (NOT University) here in Kentucky. She was selected to attend Oxford last spring under an exhange program and did extremely well. She is now preparing to graduate in May with a 4.0 GPA.

Today she received notification that she was selected for a FULL (read that 100%) renewable scholarship to the University of Cincinnati for graduate school along with a sizeable stipend for living expenses!

Right now her mom and I are having a really hard time buttoning shirts/blouses or wearing a noraml sized hat. Tell me that home school kids cannot succeed!

BTW she is Ms Conservative. She started a chapter of College Republicans at the local Community College prior to transferring to Georgetown. We are a little concerned about her getting a little liberal corruption, but not much. She still has a huge "W" on the car and spends an hour or so each night watching Sean Hannity.

As someone who went to public school and know what immorality it leads to, I'm very proud and happy to hear about you and your daughter.
God bless

Congratulations!

I sometimes wonder if home schooling is just selecting the smart genes by selecting for smart parents!

So? Academics are unimportant.
Let's get serious here. Let's look at the important issue. What about her social engineering? Has she been properly indoctrinated? Is she thinking correctly? Is she 100% politically correct enough to be promoted to the next stage? (/s)

Congratulations. It sounds like you've been excellent parents to your daughter. The world needs more loving parents like you folks.
Kudos!

"We are a little concerned about her getting a little liberal corruption, but not much."

Don't be worried.

Some of my best professors, most probably, were leftists.

The value of a good liberal arts education comes from obtaining the critical thinking skills that enable you to evaluate the merits, or lack thereof, of any particular argument.

A good education protects one from being susceptible to nonsense and BS.

It sounds like your daughter spent her time and money well.

Is her field to be in the sciences, especially the biological sciences? Of all the disciplines, this is where the most money is available for graduate studets. If you get accepted into a Ph.D. program, you'll have tuition, health insurance, and stipend covered until you graduate (usually in 5 to 7 years). No one who is accepted into a Ph.D. program in the biological sciences pays for it himself. The same is not true for a master's program. I knew someone in my first year who started out in a master's and then switched to the Ph.D. and still had to pay the >$20K for that first year.

Congratulations. That is the kind of news that makes any parent dance on air.

My daughter is Catholic-schooled, just informed me she's got a full undergrad scholarship to a state university in bio sciences. I was sweating whether she'd even get in.
