THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST.. (It's here!!).. Live thread!

THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST.. (A HIT OR A MISS?).. Live thread!

Contrary to popular media pronouncements, the first of the commercial showing of this long awaited, landmark, and controversial film has already debuted and the misconceptions that the fate of this endeavor hangs in the balance.. That is HOGWASH.. The Passion of the Christ is on the brink of a record breaking opening, in spite of the limited available screens, and the all out, and outragous efforts on the part of the National Media's near unanimous rejection, and the Hollywood establishment roadblocks to stymie this motion picture and it's brilliant and courageous director/producer..

I just receive a call from friends that attended a church sponsored midday showing of the movie with more than 850 of their fellow flock. The collective response was "it was sobering and breathtaking, and they existed with a profound feeling of moral inadequacy".

I toyed with the idea of accepting an invitation to book a private showing at a local theater for this weekend, however after calling a few local churches to help fill the seats I discovered that all (I call 12) of the parishes and neighborhood churches had already secured their own private dates with sellout crowds.. Every one of them had sold the seats within a day of their announcements... I just may book a threater in three weeks for all of my friends and family, that wish to watch it again, and again..

It was just odd. I mention it only because I don't understand it and the deification comment reminded me.

This movie should be embraced by all faiths that believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God, and died for OUR sins. This film should not divide us, but unite us all.

I think it will. I think most will see the message and quell evil's attempt to discredit the messenger.

I bought tickets for us four last week, for Wednesday at 7:30.m. I think the theaters are scrambling to accommodate viewers - I bought these tickets the same day that this theater announced - before the announcement there were three in the metro area - now there are at least 15, maybe 20. And I see Ebert and Roeper have given it "two thumbs way up."

My parents have not been to a movie theatre in almost 50 years and they are going to see "Passion."

That should give you an idea of how BIG this is going to be!

Frank Rich, Abe Foxman, the Hollywood and media elite will be feasting on a diet of crow for a long time!

FreeRepublic is not a place for you to spew your bigoted anti-Catholic dogma. If you want to start your own web site for that, go for it. I support your right to free speech.

And no, I am not, nor do I have any desire to be, a Catholic.

It's OK. I am also Catholic and faulty. I will tell you what I do when my heart is troubled. I drive 110 miles north on the 101 freeway to get to Mission Santa Barbara. Just a few steps away from my truck and all my problems no longer exist. Walk down the hundreds of years old paths and see everything is so green and healthy. Sit down and watch the birds and little animals do their thing. A visiting monk may sit down for a talk between his studies. I found a small part of Heaven there:)

I guess you hurt someone's feelings. I didn't like some of the things in your post, but I thought I did a good job explaining why. In the end...it's not a Free for All here...it's Jim's site, but I thought you brought up some legitimate reasons for not supporting this film. Carlo and the others should have to defend their positions just like you.

Let's not take it to the gutter. Start a thread if you want to discuss the Political/Religious implications of supporting the Catholic Church, but let's not take threads too far off topic. IMHO your posts should be placed back in the thread.

I'm shocked. Seriously, I figured they'd trash it.

We lived in SW North Carolina a few years back, and had a small statue of St. Francis in our yard. We held a garage sale one day and almost without exception, everyone who came by made snide or denigrating comments about us worshiping idols or Mary/The Pope instead of Jesus. Some stopped by just to do that. The garage sale must have finally given them the opening and nerve to do so. I have a cousin whose entire devotion to spreading her faith is fueled by her animosity toward Catholics.

Very sorry that you and your wife had this experience. Just goes to show that every group has its silly members.

Many years ago I was walking with a Jewish friend of mine who apropos of nothing spouted the most horrible anti-Christian limerick that I had ever heard (no one has topped it 20 years hence). All groups have members of whom they cannot be proud.

BTW, welcome to the Church we are very happy to have you in our wonderful 2000 year old home. Blessed be Jesus, Blessed be His Holy Name.

Listen: I used to be a Catholic. There is nothing I find more disturbing as a site that calls itself "Free Republic", and when one puts a post that touches a nerve, it gets deleted and from then on all responses get taken out of context. My gripe isn't against Catholics nor against Mel Gibson...just the false beliefs that they are TRICKED into believing, one day leading to doom. Here is an example: It looks like a shower room, feels like a shower room, we are told it's a shower room, so it must be a shower room!...Wrong! It's a gas chamber!
I studied medieval church history (you should too), and discovered that the Catholic Church (leadership and fooled minions) hates true Bible study because it breaks the hold the priests have on their followers, which will eventually effect their cash flow. Read Martin Luther
The same haters of truth at this site are the same types that hated what Jesus said about the religious leaders of His time...In their view, It is why they had him killed!

"Evidently it is a sin to disagree with the diefication of Mary around here. Guess the lead moderator is a Roman Catholic. The offending poster pointed out that dollars from this film would go to build Mel's private church and good Protestants might not wish to do that given our age old disagreements with Rome and the Pope."

Your first sentence bespeaks ignorance. Catholics do not deify Mary.
You second sentence is blind accusation.

As for your last sentence:
Mel invested his own money to make the movie. Many are willing to pay to see it. Mel can do what he likes with any of the profits.
As for the last part, spare us the words, and show us how you really exhibit your 'Christian' faith by donning your white hood, and roaming about the countryside hanging Catholics for their Popery.
