JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - It could be the perfect gift for the wildly ambitious Casanova.
More than three million condoms -- available in a range of colors, sizes, types and flavors -- will go on sale in South Africa Tuesday after the German-built factory that made them folded.
"This sale has attracted all types from large international wholesalers to a couple of eternal optimists," said Balix Manxgaba, group director of Auction Alliance, which is handling sealed bids for the surplus stock.
The condom factory was built as a joint venture as part of a complex arms purchase deal which saw South Africa award Germany a $594 million contract to build submarines.
Its construction was hailed in a country with the world's biggest HIV/AIDS caseload.
But the factory never opened, and now its remaining stock is up for sale. For the man who thinks even bigger, the condom factory itself will be up for sale next month.
Some heat-seeking moisture missiles seemed to have fit in the weapons purchase plan, somehow. Or, maybe Gloria Allred was right, they are all weapons.

A business confidant of mine has forwarded your name to me as someone who can be highly trusted in delicate matters. Recently a Mr. Lawng Johnson of your country was used as government advisor to our birth control and center for disease control as a foreign VD control officer. Alas, Mr. Johnson seems to have been, as you Americans say, Whacked.
Thus his position has fallen, to me to discretely dispose of the of a rather large quantity of procreation prevention devices. Naturally, this matter should be handled with care. Not wishing to be jerked around I am soliciting your assistance to spirit these devices out of my country before the government can lay their hands on them.
I must inform you, there is stiff competition for these devices as any in-depth analysis of the situaiton would readily reveal.
Should an upstanding person such as yourself be interested in assisting me in the this endeavor please reply in strictest confidence at your earlist convenience.
Sad. A fully erected factory, but the workers were stiffed. Musta been hard on them to get laid off. Did any investors get the shaft as well? Recovering any deposits spent in inventory will be messy.
