GMTA! And there's even talk that he favors amnesty for illegal aliens.
And just last month he threw ONE BILLION dollars to the Department of Indian Affairs! Talk about your expanding government welfare--these tribes will now become autonomous bodies--who knows what they'll do with all that cash?
I'll be home on election night playing Intellivision!

speedy, speaking of carter -- if you haven't already seen it yet, check out "Miracle on Ice". Near the beginning they run a long excerpt of Carter's "malaise" speech. It's really amazing (assuming you were old enough to remember that speech and all the awful stuff happening in the late 1970's) how you are transported emotionally back to all that depression and despair. I thought Carter would always rank as the worst president of my lifetime... but that was before Bubba.

Mondale won Minnesota 49.7 % to Reagans 49.5 LOL Under 4000 yes I repeat 4000 votes separated them I heard Michael Deaver floated the idea of asking for a recount... but you can imagine how the Gipper reacted.

Hiya Hounds -- unfortunately, I am old enough to remember those spirit-dampening Carter years. They always help to put whatever problems we have now in a very striking perspective. It seemed like EVERYTHING went wrong -- high inflation, high unemployment, and a futile, feckless foreign policy. And to top it off, we had to listen to Clueless Carter get on TV wearing his sweater telling us it was all our fault. It seemed like that Miracle On Ice was the first taste of the coming Reagan years of hope and accomplishment. Still ranks as one of the great sports moments of all time -- thrilling, moving, even transcendent in some ways. I sort of felt the same way about Secretariat at Belmont -- it moved beyond the realm of sports. As enfuriating and embarrassing as the Clinton era was, and as revolting as we all agree the lying X42 is, I honestly think the Carter years were worse to live through, because his defeatist personality permeated the whole country and made our future seem hopeless. But you can make solid arguments against either one of them. The press tried to spin for Carter, too, but things were so bad that even the sheeple couldn't buy into it. I worked with the then-obscure but now famous Dave Barry at the time, and I remember him saying that the only reason he could come up with for voting for Carter is that if he won, he would never be eligible to run again.

LOL! Whew, thanks. I was starting to worry.
This (#42) is why I rarely post anymore. Can tell by your 'sign-on' date that you remember when everybody at FR "got it." ;-)

You so eloquently stated: "I'll tell you what, BigTime, (are you Donnie Cochran?)
Why don't you let our man CAMPAIGN a little before running for the border, okay? We don't even know who Bush is running against, and all you pessimists are talking out your asses."
My talking ass responds: First off, Bush is campaigning. Started doing so with his less than sparkling performance on Meet the Press. Also has been on the road making speeches the last two weeks so your premise is inaccurate.
Second, you would like to just label me as a pessimist and dismiss my comments thereafter. Go ahead and do so at your own risk. My point is that this kind of idle chatter that it is "no big deal" that our candidate is trailing in the polls because the "polls don't mean anything at this point" is an argument of denial. It doesn't help the candidate. It doesn't inspire his supporters. It makes them feel comfortable sitting on their hands.
If that's your agenda, are you really for Bush or against him?
Taking ass mode off. I can't tell you how difficult it is to annunciate "p"s in this manner.

It is useful, however, to put things in perspective. There's a lot of gloom-and-doom on this site over these bogus polls. Agreed if that's the perspective. Too often I fear that our guy is viewed as inevitable to win and the idea that this will be a very close race is not taken seriously. The side that wins the margins and does the hard work with details will win.

Of course we all remember former Wisconsin Governor Patrick Lucey. One heartbeat away from heading a loser ticket. Not in '84, that would have been:

According to the Rasmussen poll out yesterday (same day as the CNN poll), Bush was up on Kerry by 5%. The point is, the polls this time of year before an election aren't good indicators of much of anything. I concede that polls at this time of year can shift and are not to be viewed as Gospel truth. That said, Bush being 10 points behind Kerry at this stage is nothing to be patting ourselves on the back about. My fear is that we go on autopilot assuming we don't need to work in the same way we did to bounce Gore out of the race when people couldn't wait to get to the polls to vote against him.
There is far more complacency among the Bush camps this campaign and stories like this that paint the picture that everything is OK do not properly inform of the real danger we have of not doing the work required to win this thing.
I believe there is a major disconnect between many conservatives' outlook over what will happen this fall and the very real risks we are running of seeing Kerry-head elected.

Now I just wish Bush had the charm and the speaking and debating ability that Reagan had. Yeah, that Kerry guy has such a rousing personality and speaking style.

Yeah, that Kerry guy has such a rousing personality and speaking style. It doesn't take much for the Dems to win. Just look how close Albert Bore got last time.
To: Always Right
Al Gore had peace, prosperity and he was coming out of an administration that the press could find no fault.
It wasn't a close win for Bush, it was a huge loss for Clinton/Gore.

You cant be serious, suggesting Bush is in Campaign mode now. That is just ridiculous. Where are the commercials? If Bush is in ANY mode right now, he is framing the agendas and arguments FOR his campaign.
Many of you behave as though you have never witnessed a Presidential campaign before. You might look at some of the posts that the Freeper "ambrose" has been sharing regarding historical Gallup Polling data.
It is February for crying out loud; the Dems have not even picked a candidate. I maintain that is will NOT be John Kerry anyway, so just who is Bush campaigning against?
Reelections have almost nothing to do with the challenger anyway, they are a referendum on the office holder. Bush has all the time in the world to point out the policies and positions which hold him in stark contrast to any Democrat. It is not time yet. Let the Dems have their fun.
Lastly, "BigTime' is the callsign for a great friend of mine, who used to fly Tomcats with VF-213 and went on to fly with the Blue Angels, which is why I asked. No harm done.

I heard Kerry served in Vietnam. You don't say!

Just for the record -- that would have been 1980 that John Anderson and Patrick Lucey headed a third-party ticket (I think they called themselves the American Party or maybe the Independent Party) that got lots of ink but not many votes. They got the journalist vote, but that was about it.
