Study: Immigrants Settling Outside Calif.

LOS ANGELES -- For many immigrants, the American dream has a different address.

California's share of the nation's new arrivals dropped sharply between 1990 and 2000, snapping a long-standing trend as immigrants looked elsewhere in the country for jobs and housing, University of Southern California researchers said Tuesday.

California, which attracted 38 percent of new immigrants in the 1990 census, saw that proportion tumble to about 25 percent in the 2000 population index. In that time, 34 states lured a larger share of immigrants, with Texas, Georgia and North Carolina recording the largest gains, researchers said.

"Immigration has crested in California and it's subsiding. It's not going to come back here to the same extent," said USC professor Dowell Myers, the study's lead author.

Newcomers "discovered all these other locations where they could live more cheaply and find jobs," Myers said. "We think the trends are going to continue downward. This is a permanent change."

The article makes no distinction between legal and illegal immigration. Of course, given the breakdown in enforcement of the immigration laws, it doesn't really matter. The point of the article is that all the problems California has been experiencing with illegal immigration---that have come close to bankrupting the states---will very soon be experienced by other states, sooner than you think.

These people go where there is work to do. Work that is spurned by Americans, due to inadequate wage or distasteful work. Like cattle, hog and chicken slaughtering. Get it? I notice they didn't mention Arkansas as one of the states. Most of the chicken processing work for Tyson is done by immigrants legal and illegal.

Lol. I'm glad we finally get to share the wealth. With any luck some of the open borders cheerleaders will find 3 families packed into the house next door. Viva la...

I really wish California would just declare its independence and become what it is destined to become.

Lawyers working with illegal immigrants have for the past several years urged them to spread out and not bunch up in hispanic slums. They bring trouble on themselves when they form large gangs and roam poverty stricken areas. When they move out, their impact is lessened, and more can come in.

It is not just that the work they do is undesirable, they are willing to work for lower wages and when they hold out for high wages, they do not get hired because their work (with a natural language barrier) is less productive.

But they do like communities where learning english is not mandatory and they can "feel more at home".

One can hope that the migration to all parts of the US will at least raise the issue to a national stage, instead of the border states having to pay the price.

You mean to tell me the immigrants can't afford a $400,000 bungalow in San Diego? I find that hard to believe!

The rest of the country is finding out what Californian's, Texan's and folks in Arizona have known for a looong time.

It was Mexifornia, Texico, and Mexizona.....and now it's MEXIMERICA!

I only hope those in DC, the two beltway parties are now happy.
