For the moment, gay and lesbian couples in San Francisco may find it easier to get a civil marriage license than the full blessings of a church wedding.
Debates over same-sex marriage have fractured the nation's religious landscape in recent decades, and San Francisco, despite its gay-friendly reputation, is no exception.

I know there are freepers who hate all things muslim - - (they're ignorant of the fact that Saddam wasn't even a religious muslim (ask Osama, who hates him), or that Turkey, a muslim country, is our ally) so I'm risking getting flamed by posting this article: it shows that some muslims are stronger defenders of values that undergird our civilization than are a lot of liberal christians and jews. Oh, well, flame away. It's the price of telling inconvenient truths.

The most vocal response to Newsom's same-sex marriage move came from a group of San Francisco Muslims. About 70 Muslims from the Al-Sabeel Masjid Noor Al Islam mosque on Golden Gate Avenue assembled on the City Hall steps Friday to protest same-sex marriage. The group approached the steps quietly, some holding signs quoting from the Koran or labeling homosexuality "inhuman." "We have records that God destroyed one city because of this," said Gabriele Strasser, referring to the biblical tale of Sodom and Gomorrah. "We don't want that to happen to San Francisco." "It's unnatural," said Mohammed Al-Lababidi, an official with the mosque.
AMEN. Where were the CHRISTIANS protesting this abomination?

We don't? (sarcasm -- mostly)

Catholics of course believe that is wrong. I think more than Muslims believe the gay lifestyle and marriage for them are wrong.
As a matter of fact, I know of no mainstream religion that accepts homosexuality or marriage for gay people as being OK!
The fact that Muslims got this right doesn't impress me. If they would stop worshiping the moon-god, abusing their women and killing the innocent... THAT WOULD IMPRESS ME TRULY!

Then you know very little about the liberal side of reformed judaism, or the unitarian church, or the united church of christ. Or the episcopal church, for that matter - - - the article itself says that the episcopal church allows individual dioceses to "marry" "gays" - and it's done in san francisco frequently. Your ignorance is showing.

BUT ONLY THE MUSLIMS SHOWED UP TO PROTEST THIS ABOMINATION IN SAN FRAN. Too bad you weren't impressed. The weenie christians allow the city to become soddom without a peep of protest, but you still hate the muslims. I'm very impressed by your narrow-mindedness.

Debates over same-sex marriage have fractured the nation's religious landscape in recent decades Considering that it has been against religious teachings for CENTURIES, to go from posing the question to an actual policy change in the church in mere decades is the definition of chutzpah.
What is it about Sodom and Gomorrah that sodomites don't understand?
One can be a nonpracticing homosexual in good faith but an unrepentant sinner is something else.

Think there were any believers in those cities?
There may be believers in San Francisco but how active are they in turning the tide there? A culture war is being waged and San Francisco (along with Las Vegas, a place that boasts of being known as Sin City) seems an odd place to live, knowing the environment.

They would NOT be mainstream.
PS: A part of the Episcopal church did that and the whole rest is leaving them to remain traditional.
The Rabbi's of most forms of Judaism also know homosexuality as an ABOMINATION.
What your refer to is sections of religions, a few from within main ones that have broke off to worship as humanists. (HUMANUNISM)

I don't know what news you are watching, but there have been all kinds of groups protesting around the country regarding what happened in San Francisco.
I saw other non-Muslim Americans in my news holding banners, signs and such in protest of these marriages in my news channels. They were all over in some ways. I do believe they protested in SF as well.
I believe we are going to get a Ammendment to the Constitution over this.

I used to think that Asian ciltures might, since homosexuals love all these Asian related items in their homes. A friend did an investigation and Buddists Monks also said it is agaisnt their religion as well.
I know of no mainstream religion that considers same-sex partnerships as normal in any way.
In the Jewish and Christian religion, the word ABOMINATION comes to mind.
But we are to love the sinner and reject the sin... Not marry them in their sin and pride of their sin.

No flames here. The article was sickly biased. Every single religious representative they cited was either pro-homo marriage, or "of two minds", but most were rabidly pro- or mildly pro. EXCEPT the Muslims, oh, and Catholics.
I have no doubt they could very easily searched out, even in SF, some representatives of traditional churches, synagogues, and others who would be happy to give their opinion solidly against "gay" marriage.
Actually, every monotheistic religion in the world traditionally holds homosexual acts to be abhorrent and sinful. Including Hindus (there's plenty in the Bay Area), and even real Buddhists, Sikhs, and Taoists.

EXCEPT the Muslims,
No it wasn't biased. IF you live in SF - or have paid attention to the coverage -- you'd know that the only people who showed up to protest were a group of Muslims. So much for wimpy christians.
To: A CA Guy

Once again, you're displaying your ignorance of liberal christian denominations and liberal judaism.
To: A CA Guy

You're wrong. I live close by. I saw -- only Muslims showed up
To: churchillbuff
Liberal Cristian or Jewish sects broke away from the mainstream, they are NOT the mainstream of the faithful. They are mostly humanists who felt the need to remold God in their image because they couldn't handle living up the God's laws.
