There was news last week that scientists in South Korea have succeeded in cloning a human embryo. Their reported intent is to extract stem cells from the cloned embryos for research and therapeutic purposes, not to produce cloned babies. But if these accounts are accurate, the world is a large step closer to reproductive cloning. What would a world with human clones be like?

Interesting food for thought, this one. Bump for later when (hopefully) I can think about the issue a little more clearly...

My dream was to clone Kathy Ireland (do something about the voice). Then I realized the clone would be a baby, and some of the, um, excitement was lost.

Except for lab animals (I can see some advantage to testing different substances on genetically identical animals) what is the point of cloning?

YOUR GENES ARE NOT THAT SPECIAL!

And why would you want to deliberately saddle a child with your physical problems? Far better to have a child the regular way with a mate that is (hopefully) either smarter, better looking, more healthy or saner then you are.

What really worries me is the possibility of clones being classed as other then the "late born twins" that they are. What they did in South Korea is gut wrenching. They killed a child. Just for his cells. And that, to them, is just peachy.

The Gay/Lesbian lobby will love it as way to pretend that they can have a normal family.

Can you provide a reference? Given other societies' lack of reverence for life, I can believe it. I just want to know for sure.
