The US has bowed to international pressure by announcing a panel to review Afghan war suspects held in Guantanamo Bay.
US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said the detainees will be allowed to appeal and the panel will decide if they are a threat to America.
He defended the detention of the 650 prisoners at Camp Delta without charges or access to lawyers as a "security necessity" and "plain common sense".
He explained that the prisoners held at the US naval base in Cuba are not "common criminals".
"They're enemy combatants and terrorists who are being detained for acts of war against our country - and that is why different rules have to apply," he said.
Some of the prisoners have been held without charge for two years, sparking criticism from human rights groups.
Mr Rumsfeld said "the US has no desire to hold enemy combatants any longer than is absolutely necessary".
But he said they were revealing useful intelligence to help the war against global terrorism.
Mr Rumsfeld said detainees "have revealed al Qaeda leadership structures, operatives, funding mechanisms, and communication methods".
He also claims they have revealed "plans for attacking the United States and other friendly countries."

I can not believe this. This is disgrace to all who died in war on terror and innocent who have died in World Trade Center. Lads what is happening in America?

They can make a dog and pony show out of it to satisfy the cowardly international community. As long as the Republicans remain in the White House, you can be sure no one will be freed that has any connection to terrorists. Lets hope the conservatives win in "04

Didnt I read a story on this same forum today that stated that the ones we already released ran right out and joined Al Quaeda? Only one way to deal with these folks.

Indeed, my palindrome FRiend. I would be surprised if it hasn't already been done... multiple times. Gotta have a decoy implant too...

How about the Snake Pliskin Special - a tracking device AND an explosive charge rolled into one.

These guys are the functional equivalent of pirates. As such they could be tried and hanged. IMHO

I think this is pretty harmless.
There are probably some who shouldn't be there, but do we want to start with tribunals for each individual there? Better the review and release - and, I'm sure, tracking.
I think this is a good way of clearing space at Gitmo for the next round of guests.

No problem. Publicly thank them all for the suburb job they did providing the US with critical information necessary to our prosecution of the War on Terror, give each one a flowery letter to that effect, Announce that as compensation they will each be given US $20,000 in cash, hold a big well publicized ceremony, give them their letters, the cash and release them.
In downtown Kabul.
At noon.
With the cameras rolling...

Why waste that much C-4 .... I always thought fuze chord wrapped arounded both legs going up to the crotch with a blasting cap inserted you know where would be a very effective way of questioning ..... of course the real "targeted" person is watching ..... this is a slight twist on a Nazi version I had read about....
