FIRST GAY WEDDING IN US (This is outrageous!)
sky news ^ | Last Updated: 09:59 UK, Friday February 13, 2004

The US city of San Francisco has become the first civil authority in the United States to officially marry gay couples in open defiance of laws banning the practice.

The city, under the orders of new liberal Mayor Gavin Newsom, officially married at least 15 gay couples and issued marriage licences to around a dozen others.

The landmark move in California came as lawmakers in Massachusetts struggled to thwart a court ruling legalising same-sex marriages in the eastern US state.

A pair of elderly lesbians became the first couple to have their same-sex union officially blessed in San Francisco, challenging a state law that bars same-sex marriages.

A city official officiated at the wedding of Del Martin, 83, and 79-year-old Phyllis Lyon after Newsom ordered city staff to issue marriage licences to gay couples.

Instead of calling couples "bride" and "groom", the wedding licence application listed lesbian couples as "1st applicant" and "2nd applicant."

In Massachusetts, meanwhile, state legislators held a second day of heated debate, as they sought to adopt a constitutional amendment that would specifically restrict marriages to unions between one man and one woman.

The move was deemed necessary after the state Supreme Court ruled in November that same sex couples had the right to marry, and that preventing them doing so violated the state constitution

I thought the first gay wedding was when Rock Hudson wed Gomer Pyle in Vegas.

They got married in Canada, and it was a beautiful day.

This is not civil disobedience, this is violation of the law by the individual in charge of upholding the law, and this Mayor should be arrested for this.

Could be a tough sell around here. Folks seem to want to pick and choose which civil servant they excoriate for the same kinds of things.

The government may consider this marriage, but God is clear on what marriage means.

Well, actually, the "government" (in this case, California) does NOT consider this marriage, in fact, these pretended marriages are against the law in California.

The City of San Francisco cannot "marry" anybody without enabling legislation from Sacramento.

The headline should read, "The US city of San Francisco has become the first civil authority in the United States to pretend to marry gay couples..."

That's where it's headed.

Followed soon by a campaign to "Give Animals the Vote."

Can my Schnauzer then adopt me?

This is unbelievable. What happened to rule of marriage since creation?

The rule of marriage since creation (permanent, mutually faithful, children imputed to the husband, no fathers for bastards) was abolished gradually in the United States between 1969 and 1972.

This is just the inevitable, final indignity.

1st Gay Marriage is in California in open defiance to state law. What is Governator Arnold going to do about it?

Those marriages are not recognized by state law and are therefore not valid.

The Governor does not have to "do" anything about them anymore than our State Governor had to "do" anything about the doggie wedding my kids once conducted "marrying" our neutered male dog to the spayed female dog belonging to another neighborhood kid.

Excuse me, but who are you really?
Most new posters lurk for a good long while before posting (this was already posted yesterday, BTW).

You're mocking everyone here by claiming you didn't know who Rush is.

Folks I live in the SF Bay Area. The ultra liberal SF Chronicle had an orgasm over this story with 2 front page articles glorifying these gay marriages and an editorial calling for legalizing these types of unions. This must of been what the last days of the Roman Empire were like.

Sorry lad but this person does not have much exposure in England not to my knowing.
I am sorry if I asked and have offended you in some or other way. When someone says is a name of a person I don't know I would like to know who that person is – is that wrong?

Did the legislature change the law or are the courts breeching the powers of the judicial branch again?
