WASHINGTON -- For all the attention paid to partisanship in this town, the more interesting -- and consequential -- fights here in this election year will pit Republicans against Republicans.
A new level of tension is emerging between President Bush and the congressional Republicans he expects to deliver his election-year agenda. Among the sore points, Mr. Bush's initiative to give legal status to immigrant workers who are here illegally, a bid to attract Latino voters, instead has roiled the party's conservative faithful. Republicans have been put on the defensive over the President's policies on Iraq. And record deficits and spending suddenly have Republicans questioning his fiscal stewardship.

Unless Howard Dean decides to repay John Kerry for his duplicity.
I can see Dean running on an independent ticket. Kerry and Gephardt really put the screws to him. He may be feeling somewhat vengeful.
He could be the Democratic "Perot" for 2004. It wouldn't surprise me one bit.
If we're not there then we're pretty damn close...
Surely you are not impying that the issue if illegal immigration centers around culinary issues?
*shakes fist* Those damn Italians and their circular cheese and meat pies! I knew they were no good when they got here.
Gillespie was cluless, I still couldn't tell you what he really said. But, to sum it up the MO is "there is no problem"...
My belief at this point. They have no plans to come up with any plans to address anything. The only plan is to keep raising the threat level and upping the scare mongering ante to keep people focused on nationl security.
And that, IMO, is a losing plan.
First of all isn't mass transit in LA an oxymoron. LA now has a subway but from what I hear nobody uses it now and I've heard that the bus service is a joke.
I guess because one can survive, we shouldn't resist the surge of illegal immigrants into the country who refuse to learn English and gobble up social services desperately needed by American Citizens
Actually I agree that schools should use English immersion. It's the teachers unions who want to keep the money flowing that bilingual education brings. There was referendum in California a couple of years ago to scale down bilingual education and I beleive it passed by a margin of 2-1. Also I've herad that many hispanic families want their children to be taught in English since English is now the world language and the ticket to success.
JMO, your anger should be directed at the liberal groups who wish to enslave their populations and not using a broad brush to paint all hispanics as not wanting to learn English or assimilate, thus alienating people who are culturally conservative into the arms of the liberal democrats.
Need repeating - perfect analogy. Now, all you Kool-aid drinkers, go give "your husband" some money so he can have a night out on the town.
Keyes was doing a hell of a great job defending Bush's WOT on O'Reilly recently.
500,000 daily transit riders. If you want to call them oxymoron's, that's your business.
I believe the LA MTA operates either the 2nd or 3rd largest mass transit system in the country.
But, you are right to a degree. It is falling out of favor with more and more people. (I know several former riders who now hop in their car in the morning). Very poor timetable reliability, language barriers (mostly to english speakers), safety, new fare structures, strikes, etc have taken a toll on the integrity of the system.
JMO, your anger should be directed at the liberal groups who wish to enslave their populations
I assure you that I have much disdain reserved for just these people
and not using a broad brush to paint all hispanics as not wanting to learn English or assimilate, thus alienating people who are culturally conservative into the arms of the liberal democrats.
Well, my friend, I live it. And the ratio of them who WANT to assimilate is very low. I have a friend who's mother has been her illegally for 28 years ... and still can't form a sentence in English. Why? She doesn't have to. Everything in this city is printed in Spanish, most of the social service works speak Spanish, and she can fill out WIC, Food Stamp, etc applications in Spanish.
There has to be an incentive to learn English, and certain areas of the country are discouraging it, simply by making English completely uncessesary.
And that, IMO, is a losing plan.
Amen!!!
Bush is a one-termer!
He came across as an unprepared Frat House Kid!
Amazingly, he seems to have picked up NO ability to articulate anything.
If you have your way, by helping to give the Democrats the White House, you will get several "bonuses" that you will be able to complain about for decades to come;
Kerry will appoint his ultra liberal cabinet, Attorney General, Secretary of Defense/UN (More correctly referred to as the UN.) Plus all the other leftists that will run this country and dictate policy.
Next, we get the most liberal supreme court in our history, which will make their legislative decisions from the bench, gay marriage, make rulings based on the ACLU agenda.
You can guarantee the southern borders will be swung open for all to enter with open liberal arms! (provided they pledge to vote Democrat)
TAXES! (he sky's the limit)
GUN CONTROL more likely confiscation. Much like Australia, you will only be able to use your firearms under strict government supervision at government regulated ranges, when you're done, you turn it back in to kept by the government. (Canada is currently in the process of adopting this policy)
You also get less Republicans elected to the legislature because if most of you stay home, the Democrats won't. This notion refutes the lunacy of your wonderful and coveted "GRIDLOCK".
I could go on for hours about what more we will lose if the Democrats take this country over again, (and they will if you have your way) but the damage will be beyond your worst nightmare.
I realize that I am wasting my voice by attempting to reason with you, you are willfully blind and closed to any logical thought. I also believe you prefer to have something to rant and rage about, much like we had when Clinton was in office. This can be the only obvious conclusion as to why you would cut your nose off to spite your face!
Well articulated. This pretty much sums up the mantra of the Republican Party.
"So what if we alienate you with Immigration and Fiscal abhorations ... you pretty much gotta vote for us anyway. Our opponents are even worse!"
*shrug* I guess they're right.
They will ride that horse til it drops dead.
