[history]
February 10, 2004 -- Saudi authorities have arrested a fighter pilot under suspicion of planning to crash a jet in Israel in a Sept. 11-style terror attack, it was reported yesterday.
The pilot had allegedly been recruited by al Qaeda to carry out the homicide mission against an undisclosed target, Israeli TV reported. Saudi investigators are rounding up other people who may have been involved in the plot, and the investigation is continuing, the report said.

This is good news. Maybe there is hope for Saudi-Israeli warming of relations?

Let me guess, his name was Mohamed something right?

Whoa! We have speculated on this. Now, nature of the payload he would have carried. They don't say. It could've been just the plane itself, I suppose.
And continuing along the lines of the dog who didn't bark, the assumption the report leaves you with is that he was Saudi.
What if he was one of Pakistanis rumored to have been seconded to Saudi.
Not that farfetched, Pakistani pilots are alleged to have flown for various Arab airforces during their wars against Israel.

Saudi's had very good reason to stop this attempt.
Doubt the clymer would have made it to targer intact unless he was expert at flying supersonic at 25 ft. in the dark.

"I think there has been an exaggeration," Mr. Kerry said when asked whether President Bush has overstated the threat of terrorism. "They are misleading all Americans in a profound way." -John Kerry January 29, 2004.

Twenty years ago, all fighter pilots in Saudi Arabia were "extra princes", members of the Saudi royal family and the elites. I don't know if this is still the case or not. But if it is, for one of these privlidged people to go along with a suicide pact would be extraordinary.

I'm glad this plot was stopped before it was started, but one thing puzzles me:
But Israel has increased its air security, including upgrading its ground-to-air missiles to shoot down planes,
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the purpose of a ground-to-air missile to shoot down planes? What were the missiles capable of before the upgrade? Duck hunting?
