RANCHO CORDOVA (AP) - A 53-year-old woman who fired nine shots with two handguns to ward off an intruder said she tried to avoid hitting her furniture.``Priorities, right?'' said Carolyn Lisle of Rancho Cordova. ``It was one of those nights. I have a few holes in my glass out front.''

She fired NINE times and all she accomplished was one wound to the arm?! She really needs to go back to the firing range for some practice. She's lucky that the didn't hit any of her guests, forget about the furniture.

This lady is a former corrections officer, aren't they given firearms instruction that would make her competent? Looks like she needs more time at the range though.

In addition, she didn't seem to be able to control the .357. She would have been better off loading it with some good .38 special rounds.

Year 'round, I keep my 12ga very close by with 4 - 3 1/2" T shot shells loaded. T shot is the largest pellet short of buck shot. I used to hunt ALOT of ducks and geese south of Houston, and the T shot would really reach out and touch those geese, some 45 yards plus. I have patterned goose shot repeatedly, and for my money, the T shot is the way to go. At 10-20 feet, you are looking at a paper plate sized pattern, sausage making machine. Course, gotta have the glock 23 ready for lots of carnage.

A woman after my own heart. Protect that furniture! LOL, you gotta love her. But she does need to spend some time on the range, and I'm sure the cops told her that.

Had the same thought, but then I remembered the first time I tried to hit a moving target (and that was just a piece of paper on a wire!) Man, it's hard. Add the pressure of having to defend your life, and it's a lot to ask. From what I can see, she did the job that needed doing -- protecting herself from this lunatic.

And for the record, I am willing to bet that she missed because she a) was looking at her target rather than the front sight (very easy to do with a mover) and b) mashed the trigger. I'd look for those rounds either in the floor, or low down in the wall, not sailing through the neighbor's bedroom window. Could have happend, but the mechanics favor the floor.

But, while we're carping, she could probably use some work on her speed re-loads, too.

I have a friend who worked as a Sheriff in Northern California. I think there are some conservative gun owners in "them neck o' the woods".

Well, this seems reasonable because a person usually doesn't get charged with committing a crime unless they've actually committed a crime.

...a .357 has 'way too much penetration for a high-density suburban environment.

Here's my thinking on overpenetration:

First order of business is, you gotta stop the assailant. To do this effectively in the case of a determined bad guy you need to cause massive damage to a vital area such as the brain, spinal cord, heart or aorta. You will be shooting through the perp's clothing, maybe through a heavy leather jacket. You need enough penetration to reach a vital area in his center of mass.

If you only wound some drugged-up psycho with a low-penetration round and he goes berserk and charges, the chances of him killing you are pretty high.

If you fire off 6 rounds from a .357 and some miss the perp, the chances of one of those rounds killing a neighbor in the next house are much less.

I want to make exit wounds in my assailant.
