A new poll showed Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts leading in Virginia as four of the Democratic candidates prepared to show their wares at a sold-out dinner in Richmond tonight.

The Mason-Dixon opinion research poll taken for several news organizations in the state showed Kerry with 34 percentage points, Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina with 25 points and retired Army Gen. Wesley Clark with 14 points.

The rest of the candidates trailed badly, while 13 percent of the likely voters were undecided. A copy of the poll, taken at midweek, was made available to The Times-Dispatch yesterday. The margin of error was 4 percentage points.

It's rather curious that none of the news media picks up the fact that although Kerry may be leading [in this case 34%] in the polling, in very few cases has he obtained the majority of the vote.

Which is another way of saying that most of the Democrats prefer somebody else.

The Fox poll is fair and balanced without "special sauce".

Good point! Also, the polls just prior to the SC primary were showing Edwards up by about four points, but his margin of victory was more like 15 points. A lot of the polls seem to have been off by quite a bit lately. So we shouldn't put too much faith in these poll numbers. IMHO Edwards is a far better campaigner than Kerry. Even if he can't pass Kerry he may be able to draw off enough support along with the other contenders to make it hard for Kerry to cinch the nomination early.
