TV vulgarity grab

Howard Dean stepped into the culture wars this week by proclaiming "silly" a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) investigation of the on-air smut that passed for halftime entertainment at this year's Super Bowl.

"There are a great many far worse things on television that you can inadvertently turn on when you happen to be cruising through cable at regular viewing hours," Mr. Dean said from the campaign trail. He didn't explain how he would know, however, since he and his wife have repeatedly told us they don't subscribe to cable television.

Hollywood has convinced itself that conservatives have a stranglehold on the media and the only way to break it is to "push the envelope" with more sleaze.

What is more evident is that, the worse a given performer's sales are, the farther they will lower themselves into the gutter. Janet Jackson's stunt is not new, she just selected an inappropriate venue in which to pull it. We have tolerated this type of behavior from a myriad of "stars" including Janet's brother, Michael, Brittany "the teen slut" Spears, daytime soap operas and the like.

Unlike days gone by, the FCC is unwilling to enforce obscenity standards and has allowed an increasing level of vulgarity to slip into normal broadcast media. Hollywood may be titillated by saying "dirty words" in public, the rest of us recognize their immature obsession for what it is.

Frankly, I prefer the fantasy shows like "Father Knows Best", "I Dream of Jeanie", "The Brady Bunch" and the old Andy Griffith show with their saccharin sweetness and gentility. If Hollywood types want to sit in the corner amusing themselves by saying "doo-doo", that's their choice. I don't have to hear it. My TV has an OFF button and it mostly stays OFF these days because what passes for entertainment is rooted in 3rd grade body function jokes.

Hopefully something will be done about this now. I'm so tired of sleezy, fake sex being thrown in my face all the time. The worst part of it is the fact that it's being done to worship the god of the USA, money and greed. Sheesh! They'll destroy our society and wreck the lives of our children because they just have to have a few million more.

Cable TV is not governed the same as OVER THE AIRWAVES broadcast TV.
