SANAA, Yemen, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- A purported statement by al-Qaida in Yemen warned Saturday of a "major strike" soon in the United States.

The statement, distributed by the Yemeni Tagamoo Party for Reforms, said: "A major strike, a big event will take place in America soon," reminiscent of the Sept. 11 attacks.

these cruise ships norwalk outbreaks are purely hygiene related. the buffets are a big problem, everyone uses the same serving utensils, it spreads to all eaters.

if you must cruise and don't want to get sick: PURELL all the time.

Steve Pomerantz (ex FBI) was on Fox News a few minutes ago discussing the Al Queda sleepers cells that have infiltrated within 40 states of the US. Mr. Pomerantz responded to commentator's question that the FBI was aware of the exitence and the whereabouts of some of these cell members and that they were being monitored, but cannot be monitored at all times.

Pomerantz also stated the bigger problem other than the cell members that are known of is the sleeper cell members that the FBI and other government agencies are not aware of.

I have cruised - multiple times a few years back and there was no such stigma associated with taking cruises back then and we never ever met anyone who had taken ill as the result of taking a cruise other than seasickness.

My favorite poster shows a picture of a very small fish with a huge nasty fish ready to gulp it. Printed below "No, you're not being paranoid." Truly it rends itself to the gist of this thread.

Sorry, JP, but can you please excuse me from that good idea in light of the area that I reside in?

I just cannot read my ...ug... local paper ... newsday ...ug... barf.

And...

I just cannot read my ...ug... other paper ...
New York slimes ...ug... barf.

The news I get from these pro-liberal, pro-hedonistic toilet paper rags is usually from other FR posters! I'm with Calpernia: I avoid my local "news" rags.

these cruise ships have alot of crew members who, shall we say, might not have the same hygiene and food handling standards in their native countries as we area accustomed to. that is a big part of it.

The ship crews we saw were mainly from the Philippines. Thanks to those cruises we got to see parts of the world (along with our youngest son) that we could not afford to travel to these days, nor would I feel safe in doing so. We saw sanitation issues in some places that memory will never erase. I know just what you mean.

My mother in law is from Thailand. I honestly don't think she has ever cleaned her refrigerator or bathroom, despite being this country for 30 years.

On a personal level she is clean. She showers daily and washes her hands like a fanatic (she is a nurse) but the house, oh man, the house...

Catastrophic attack possible: Bush
From correspondents in Washington
February 15, 2004

THE United States still faced the threat of catastrophic attack by nuclear, biological or chemical weapons, President George W. Bush said today.

"The possibility of secret and sudden attack with weapons of mass destruction is the greatest threat before humanity today," he said as he highlighted his security credentials in a weekly radio address geared to his campaign for this year's election.

"Terrorists and terrorist states are in a race for weapons of mass murder, a race they must lose.

"They are resourceful; we must be more resourceful. They are determined; we must be more determined."

The September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States showed what hijackers "could inflict upon our country, armed with box cutters, mace and 19 airline tickets", he added.

"Will be glad when the 22nd comes and goes, without mishap, hopefully."

I was looking at a Calender on the net yesterday. It seemed to indicate that the 20th was the last day of 1424. Does anyone have any proof of when the last day really is ? Also at what time would this happen ? I believe it would be around 6pm EST on the last day of 1424. Is this right ?

China Links with Saudi, Pakistan a U.S. Concern

By Carol Giacomo, Diplomatic Correspondent

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States believes China is still cooperating with Saudi Arabia on missiles and with Pakistan on nuclear technology and missiles, despite Beijing's promises to control arms proliferation, U.S. officials said.

These are among the subjects expected to be discussed when senior U.S. and Chinese officials meet this week in Beijing, the U.S. officials told Reuters.

Undersecretary of State John Bolton, the top U.S. non-proliferation official, plans to encourage Chinese participation in an international arms interdiction regime but Beijing's own activities will also be a focus, officials said.

The focus on proliferation has intensified since the father of Pakistan's atomic weapons program, Adbul Qadeer Khan, confessed to selling nuclear secrets to Libya, Iran and North Korea.

The Bush administration considers Iran and North Korea the greatest near-term proliferation threats.

But it is also "concerned about what the Saudis are getting from the Chinese in terms of missiles," a U.S. official said. "They want to continue a relationship with the Saudis."

Experts say ballistic missiles are most useful for delivering weapons of mass destruction and this would be especially worrisome if Islamic radicals took control in Riyadh or if the current Saudi rulers felt threatened by an Iranian nuclear bomb.

NUCLEAR SAUDI?

For some time, experts have speculated that Saudi Arabia helped bankroll the Pakistani nuclear program with the expectation that at some point it would gain access to a nuclear weapon.

In recent interviews, several senior U.S. officials were cagey about a possible Saudi nuclear program.

One said: "There is no evidence that Pakistan has helped Saudi Arabia with a nuclear program."

But another official said: "There is always concern even if the information is flimsy."

Saudi Arabia is a key U.S. ally and has cooperated in the war on terrorism. But the relationship is often shrouded in secrecy, especially since it was revealed that most of the hijackers who attacked the United States on Sept 11, 2001 were Saudi.

According to Richard Russell of Georgetown University, the Saudis "already have in place a foundation for building a nuclear weapons deterrent."

In the mid-1980s, Riyadh secretly negotiated the $3 billion purchase of 50 to 60 Chinese CSS-2 missiles, with a range of 2,500 miles, U.S. officials have said.

Riyadh and Beijing said the missiles delivered to Saudi Arabia had conventional warheads and rebuffed U.S. requests to inspect them, Russell said.

"It is well past time for Washington to renew calls for independent inspection of the Saudi missiles to ensure that they are armed as the Chinese and Saudis claim, and that ballistic missile modernization efforts are not underway," he said.

In November 2000, China vowed it would not help any country develop ballistic missiles that could deliver nuclear weapons.

In August 2002, Beijing published a comprehensive missile export control system but a 2003 CIA report said China continued to work with Pakistan and Iran on ballistic missile projects.

The unclassified version of the CIA report did not mention Saudi Arabia but two U.S. officials told Reuters the kingdom's dealings with China are an issue.

"We have unanswered questions. There is some cooperation we have seen" between China and the Saudis, one official said.

U.S. officials also said China was continuing a nuclear relationship with Pakistan. "The suspicion is that they have not ceased it and that's obviously a problem as well," one official said.

"And not just nuclear, but cooperation with Pakistan in the missile area as well," he added.

China so far has resisted joining the U.S.-led Proliferation Security Initiative under which countries pledge to interdict shipments of weapons of mass destruction. (Reporting by Carol Giacomo, editing by Anton Ferreira; Reuters messaging: carol.giacomo.reuters.com@reuters.net)

Interesting, maybe, but not really...

New dispatchers are often trained on the night shift....
Someone probably pressed the wrong button.
Or maybe it really was just as the dispatcher said -- a
malfunction.

Get a copy of your local newspaper.

If the police department received that
many calls; there should be something
in the paper ---if not today, probably on
Monday.
