BELLEVUE, Wash. - King County sheriff Dave Reichert announced Thursday he will run for the seat being vacated by Republican Congresswoman Jennifer Dunn.
Reichert made the announcment at a noon news conference. He said he's just starting to put together a campaign organization but he already has one endorsement - King County Prosecutor Norm Maleng.
Reichert has spent 32 years in law enforcement and recently wrapped up the Green River case with Gary Ridgway's confession to 48 murders.
Dunn has announced that she will not run for re-election in the Eighth District, which covers Seattles eastside suburbs from Snohomish County to Mount Rainier.
State Republican Party Chairman Chris Vance said he expects there will be more than one GOP candidate in the race. Democrat Alex Alben of Mercer Island is the only announced candidate.

Reichert is a first-tier candidate. I don't think he'd have too much trouble vs. Alex Alben, even in this tossup district. John Carlson has already endorsed him.

He will be solid, glad he skipped going for GOV. Of course if he HAD gone for governor, Dino Rossi could/would have run for Congress.

What's your take on Dino and his chances? I'm guessing he has a 35% chance of winning. Pretty good, considering.

HORRAY! I'm no longer worried about the 'Rats winning this district. Thanks for the posting, Johnny! : )

Yaaahhhhhh!!!!
This actually makes me glad Dunn retired. Richert will be a great rep. I can't imagine him having much of a primary challenge, he'll walk away with it. I'm also guessing he has his eyes on bigger things down the road. I think Maria Cantwell should watch her back.
Anyhow, as far as this race goes, Dems better turn out the lights, the party is over.

I was in Indianapolis this past week and the driver who took me to the airport proudly mentioned that "one of their local girls moved here to Washington and got herself elected to Congress." (He was snickering, and it was obvious he thought she pulled one over on the dumb local hicks.) He said her father was a big Democrat in Indiana. I said "that must be Maria Cantwell. In Washington, she's known as Maria Cant-do-well, and she made it into the papers when she appeared nearly naked as a belly dancer at at Halloween party. I wonder if her daddy saw that one?" That shut him up.

Great. Any one who can win county-wide office in King county shouldn't have any trouble.
How is he on abortion?

I can think of a better nickhame for her but I don't think I'm allowed to post it here.
