For Immediate Release
NEW YORK, NY -- February 4, 2004
On February 5, 2004 the Columbia College Conservative Club (CCCC) will hold an affirmative action bake sale from 12 to 1. This bake sale is not a fundraiser; it is a practical satire of race-based preference policies. It is not intended to demean or offend anyone, but to teach by analogy. If it is offensive for some that a person of a particular race should purchase junk food for less than a member of another group, is it less racist for members of one group to be admitted with fewer qualifications than one in another group? Just as it would be prejudiced to assume that members of communities historically discriminated against are unable to pay the same price as white males, it is even more racist to assume that they are unable to meet the standard admissions requirements of a prestigious university or the hiring standards of a well-known corporation. Racial preferences and set asides are discriminatory, demeaning and divisive. They have a balkanizing effect on campuses, companies, and the country.
We are holding the bake sale at the same time as Columbia's Diversity Recruiting Conference in Lerner Hall to highlight the racially discriminatory policies pressed by the university.
It is our hope that President Bollinger, famous for his support of racial preferences in the Gratz and Grutter Supreme Court cases, will uphold the rights of free speech and civil protest, he has so eloquently defended in his academic and legal briefs.
In 1998, Columbia University used protests by radicals to effectively shut down Accuracy in Academia conference held by the College Republicans. In so doing, the administration not only broke a contract, but also damaged the reputation of the university.
Please join us as we stand up for individual rights and racial equality.
About the Columbia College Conservative Club:
The Columbia College Conservative Club (http://www.columbia.edu/cu/conservative) was founded to promote the ideas of liberty and individual responsibility, which formed the basis of the United States and of our continued freedom and prosperity. For all too many years these ideas have been ignored or attacked on this campus. Our goal at CCCC is to provide the necessary ideological balance to Columbia and to end the 40 years of leftist decline at the university.

This event is only open to Columbia students, faculty, and staff.
While this event may go off without a hitch, I assume that the Bake Sale will be shut down either directly by the administration or due to a security threat. Either way, President Lee Bollinger will be held accountable.
For purposes of security, I am bringing a tape recorder and camera to the event.
I hope that I can count on the help of other Freepers when the excrement hits the fan.

May I recommend that almond cookies and bhaklava be placed on the list of items to be sold?
Perhaps, you can auction particular desserts to the highest bidder. Subsidies can be provided for under bid items.

You wouldn't be bored if you had to face down a pack of howling leftists and race baiters.

Done that before when I was working for Jesse Helms on a college campus. After a while, you recognize the ignorance of the masses.

I'm not bored with bake sales and think this is an excellent tactic.
Yes, the shrieking mob is ignorant and intolerant, but who knows, you might plant the seeds of doubt in some -- doubt of the beneficence of group-think authoritarian Leftism.
Sorry I don't go into NYC anymore or I would be there with you.
To: rmlew
Bringing a tape recorder and camera is an excellent idea.
Leftists get testy when their hypocrisy is waved around in public, and feel mean-spirited urges to silence or injure those who have embarrassed them.
Best of luck, and we'll look forward to your after-action report.

I'm really bored with this whole bake sale thing. Well, try to live with it as best you can.
To: AppyPappy
The idea is dated, but it works.
1. Columbia refuses to publish the racial and religious statistics for the university. It also refuses to release the admission standards.
2. The new president of the university is LEE BOLLINGER. He was the defendant in the Gratz and Grutter cases as the former president of UMich.
Ron.
PS. I gotta go pick up some brownies!

Good luck! If you know somebody who can bring a video camera, that would be even better.

You need 2 cameras. One to record the event. A second (out of sight) to record the primary camera operator as the Left tries to destroy the evidence.

Good luck and God speed! There are probably few campuses which need a little Conservative humor more.

I thought an after action report would be appropriate.
The event went surprisingly well. Despite being situated between a "Defend Affirmative Action" table run by the International Socialist Organization (Trotskyites) and a "End the Death Penalty" table, the response was mostly civil. We didn't sell much, but we had a lot of people come by.
We got covereage from the NY Sun, CU Daly Spectator, and some journalism school students.
I'll post pictures later.

Always glad to see another bake sale. If someone here is bored with it, I can assure them that it is new and novel to the student body of each school it is tried.
