STATEMENT BY PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH ON THE MA SUPREME COURT RULING APPROVING GAY MARRIAGE
The White House ^ | February 4, 2004 | President George W. Bush

STATEMENT BY THE PRESIDENT

Today's ruling of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court is deeply troubling. Marriage is a sacred institution between a man and a woman. If activist judges insist on re-defining marriage by court order, the only alternative will be the constitutional process. We must do what is legally necessary to defend the sanctity of marriage.

"President Bush took the bull by the horns and was first up to the plate in his SOTU Address when he spoke of this issue.

"What is it you expect him to have done at this point?"

He can try getting ON the bull and riding it until the job is done.

I asked you to say specifically what you think he should be doing.

My God! The ruling comes down yesterday and you blame President Bush.

Be very precise and be sure it's something he has the power to do.

I'll wait.

The constittion is a constitution. Incorporating what is already the building block of society is very acceptable.

The "dictionary" line is being used by homosexual groups.
It is no different than the commercial during the Rush radio show about the Federal Marraige Amendment.

and what will the "formal" charges be on these judges? Are Mass judges appointed for life? is there a merrit retention vote?

Two of the 2000 FL SC Judges have been up for retention votes, both won easly with 80+% of the vote.

Here are the other amendments:

Amendments
First Amendment - Religion and Expression
Second Amendment - Bearing Arms
Third Amendment - Quartering Soldiers

AP Julie Goodridge, left, and her partner Hillary are plaintiffs in the gay marriage lawsuit.

IMO it looks like Hilliary on the left!

Someone please send this to Laura Ingraham. She was off the charts last night upset at the President because he was 'hiding behind Scott McClellan'. This is the official White House statement. The President does not need to hold a press conference every time she gets her thong in a wad...

He has to save the personal statement when he is ready. There was a conservatie group spokesman who said they expect the president to now support the FMA.

It is just a question of when will it be a good and opportune time to make that announcement. During the DNC convention?

Cannot imagine any conservative wanting a Senator from MA to be elected President!

On that I can agree with you. However I'm not sure I want the national government mucking around in the internal affairs of the states with amendments and laws that directly affect the citizens of the respective states in this manner

For who? The men with the butterfly nets??

Unless your request is made with a specific case and point, I'm letting them take you away.

Is he talking "impeachment" or is he talking "Amendment to Constitution"?

Thanks for the post.

This is a huge issue, and depending on the response taken, worthy in itself of a vote.

What on earth would provoke such a comment?

I asked you what specifically you expect the president of the United States to do at this moment.

Does anyone here think Pres. Bush wants an amendment to ban gay marriage in all of the fifty states, or only to keep it contained to the states that either adopt it, or whose Supreme Courts mandate it? In other words, does anyone here think Bush is advocating telling state governments how they can choose to define marriage within their own borders?

From the State of the Union:

A strong America must also value the institution of marriage. I believe we should respect individuals as we take a principled stand for one of the most fundamental, enduring institutions of our civilization. Congress has already taken a stand on this issue by passing the Defense of Marriage Act, signed in 1996 by President Clinton. That statute protects marriage under federal law as a union of a man and a woman, and declares that one state may not redefine marriage for other states.

Activist judges, however, have begun redefining marriage by court order, without regard for the will of the people and their elected representatives. On an issue of such great consequence, the people's voice must be heard. If judges insist on forcing their arbitrary will upon the people, the only alternative left to the people would be the constitutional process. Our nation must defend the sanctity of marriage. (Applause.)

The outcome of this debate is important -- and so is the way we conduct it. The same moral tradition that defines marriage also teaches that each individual has dignity and value in God's sight. (Applause.)

~SNIP~

He is advocating a constitutional amendment stating marriage is between a man and a woman.
