STATEMENT BY PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH ON THE MA SUPREME COURT RULING APPROVING GAY MARRIAGE
The White House ^ | February 4, 2004 | President George W. Bush

STATEMENT BY THE PRESIDENT

Today's ruling of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court is deeply troubling. Marriage is a sacred institution between a man and a woman. If activist judges insist on re-defining marriage by court order, the only alternative will be the constitutional process. We must do what is legally necessary to defend the sanctity of marriage.

in all reality, until the SCOTUS tosses the federal defense of marriage act, they won't be going for a federal constitutional amendment. Until the federal DoMA is tossed, this is a states rights issue.

Don't be such an ass.

Sorry. Didn't mean anything by it.

Why do you have to be an ass by calling me an ass? I didn't insult you, did I?

Unwind, Petronski. Sheesh!

SCOTUS has no say in state courts on these matters. The Mass legislature on the other hand should tell the court to get stuffed. But they won't.

It's a fait accompli. The road to travel now is a Constitutional Amendment making it perfectly clear that the "full faith and credit clause" does not apply.

The Massachusetts legislature refused to act a couple of years ago when they were presented enough signatures to make DOMA a ballot issue. It's no secret why they failed to act. They are liberals and cultural progressives, the enemies of conservatives.

Thanks for the ping. I never doubted Bush's position on this issue but I'm glad to hear it anyway.

And if he doesn't go by your prescribed actions you'll be miffed or what?

He's taking the bull by the horns. He brought it up in his SOTU Address because he could see these yahoos coming down the pike with this outrageous decision.

He'll lead the way, have no fear.

(And namecalling isn't necessary, even if you have an obvious animus for another)

At some point we will need to take action against liberal activist judges before they destroy the very fiber of this nation. These judges are no different in spirit than the members of Al Qaeda, both seek the destruction of the United States, though their methods may vary.

That's done by Congress, not the president.

Sheesh. Everyone's a parliamentarian. I'm not talking about the technical parliamentary procedures, I'm talking about putting some political capital on the line by attaching himself to it publically, and pushing for it, fighting for it.

There should be an amendment - but in Massachusetts' constitution.

LOL, forget about it, that won't stop the Mass Supreme Judical Oligarchy. The MAss constitution already has an article stating quite clearly that marriage is the purview of the governor and the legislature. Judicial tyrannists are nowwwhere to be found in that article but that did not phase them in the least.

I hope he does, I'm not saying he won't, I'm just pointing out that a press statement is one thing, action is quite another.

We don't necessarily need an amendment. There is the impeachment process too. And the state Senate can simply ignore the court or declare the ruling illegal.

the only alternative will be the constitutional process

That may be a losing proposition. It would probably be evenly divided - Democrats voting FOR same-sex marriage, Republicans voting AGAINST same-sex marriage.

Do Democrats have any morals or standards at all? And, if so, what are they? Please, only serious responses.

Yeah! Send in the national guard and lock-down the courthouse!

Let's see if he stands by that position now, or checks the polls and flip-flops again.

Indded Jorge, Ohio, a battleground state, just passed the most stringent DOMA act in the country even codifying that civil unions are invalid.

Maybe we can encase the whole courthouse in a giant lucite cube.

The MA Supremes actually told the MA legislature what law it must pass. The Constitution is now inside out.

Gotta put an end to this gargage.

You GO! Mr. President!!!

I wouldn't bet the farm on that, the stars are aligning for a bigtime battle in the culture war.
