February 3, 2004 -- CBS is moving to bounce Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake from next Sunday's Grammy Awards amid the national uproar following their X-rated, prime-time Super Bowl stunt. Sources told The Post the network will demand the two stars be tossed from 46th Annual Grammy Awards if CBS's probe shows the duo schemed in advance to expose Jackson's pierced breast during the halftime spectacle.

My teenaged daughter and I heard the "song" on the radio yesterday. Not knowing the artist, my kid's reaction was "yuck, that thing's awful".

Got it. Thanks for the links. Frankly, I don't understand why we can't simply buy a digital video recorder without having to buy a monthly service. After all, you can buy all the VCR's you like and no one ever tries to gig you for a monthly fee. What if I don't WANT the program guides? I've already got a 3-day guide on DirecTv.

I find the reaction to this incident entirely overblown and quite hypocritical -- apparently nobody seems to mind that virtually every "dance" sequence shown on TV is little more than a ritualized dry-humping session, but one flash of a breast (nipple-covered, even!) and everyone acts like it's the end of the world.

In his apology, Timberlake said the titillating surprise was not intentional - it was merely a "wardrobe malfunction." But he later told "Access Hollywood" that "we love giving you all something to talk about."

I guess it never occurrs to Timberlake or other modern pop performers to actually write and perform a song that is worth talking about on its own merits.

I know there are Freepers here who think we should "lighten up" and it was no big deal. Well guess what, millions of viewers thought it was a big deal and will be boycotting Viacom companies, MTV, CBS, and all awards shows. And that's our STATEMENT.</I.
Unfortuantely we can't, unless we change the way our providers due business. If you subscribe to Plan A a portion of monthly payments are paid to those channels. Plan B & C same thing. So even if you never watch MTV or Bravo you are still paying them. It really stinks doesn't it and needs to be changed.

CBS is a network; the network programming is actually "broadcast" by it's affiliate stations and/or cable/satellite entities.

The way I understand it, each licensed broadcast station is liable for the content that is broadcast over their facilites. Therefore, each one of the hundreds of CBS affiliates COULD be liable, and fined/punished by the FCC for broadcasting the event.

If that happens, CBS is not going to be TOOOooooo popular with all of it's affiliate stations.

Sad, but true. I checked out my Adelphia cable packages again, and if I get rid of MTV and Bravo, I lose the History and Biography channels, American Movie Classics... as well as others I enjoy such as TVLand. I love watching the old sitcoms. TVLand is probably owned by Viacom as well...*sigh*.

I'm not prude, and I have no problem with these channels being aired, but I don't appreciate having to pay for them. Every month that I pay my cable bill, I'm essentially giving MTV my money. I feel like I'm being held hostage here. To quote the title of an old movie favorite..."Something's Gotta Give".

A series one TiVo unit will work without the service. Series two and later will not. I bought a series one last year at a flea market for 35 bucks. It gave me a month of free programming when I set it up. I decided it wasn't worth the fees for the channel guides and let the service expire. It still functions in "manual" mode - meaning I can program it by time, date, and channel. The recordings aren't labeled by show titles but I don't care. The best feature - the live TV buffer - still works. I can still pause, rwind and fast forward "live" TV.

I also bought a ReplayTV w/ lifetime service in December when the company had a big pricing fiasco. IMHO, the ReplayTV is far superior to TiVo in terms of features and flexibility. However, the Replay doesn't work at all without service.

There are DVRs that come with free service the RCA has units that come with a free basic Guide+ service. Buy.com sells an RCA DVR/DVD player combo for ~$240.

The Super Bowl is viewed by something approaching or exceeding a BILLION people ALL over the world. This crap does make us look like the Great Satan to large segments of that world, it really does.




A genuine punishment would be to have these "artists" lose all the promotional funds they would usually have for their latest endeavors. Let their product find airplay and sales strictly on its merits.
