Janet Apologizes, Says Super Bowl Stunt Went Too Far

One day after Janet Jackson's shocking Super Bowl halftime performance, the singer took responsibility for the breast-baring incident and said she never intended the stunt to go as far as it did.

"The decision to have a costume reveal at the end of my halftime show performance was made after final rehearsals," Jackson said in a statement released Monday (February 2). "MTV was completely unaware of it. It was not my intention that it go as far as it did. I apologize to anyone offended — including the audience, MTV, CBS and the NFL."

Jackson's performance shocked onlookers when Justin Timberlake — who was performing with her — pulled off a piece of Jackson's costume, revealing her right breast.

MTV, which produced the halftime show for CBS, issued an apology shortly after the show, calling the incident "unrehearsed, unplanned, completely unintentional and ... inconsistent with assurances we had about the content of the performance" (see "Janet, Justin, MTV Apologize For Super Bowl Flash").

Timberlake also apologized on Sunday, calling the incident "not intentional and regrettable."

On Sunday, Jackson's reps told MTV News that the singer apologized for the move, but the singer issued no public statement on the incident until Monday.

But she could (possibly) argue that she doesn't believe in sex outside of marriage. [chortle]

Unlike her brother, at least Ms. Jackson is accepting responsibility.

If she first sought to accept responsibility, none of what she and Justin did would have happend in the first place.

A passive voice weasel-statement, and totally meaningless. Who made the decision? You?

<They are all lying. If freepers knew about something shocking happening, you can bet MTV and everybody else did too.

I agree; the only denial that even had a ring of credibility was Tagliabue's, issued before the game was over. He had to know who was producing and who was performing, though; what did he expect?

OTOH, even without the breast-baring, the show was indecent, way over the line with simulated sexual acts, etc. CBS, MTV, and the NFL went too far, whether the bosum was bared during rehearsals or not.

where's the outrage from the NOW gang? Nancy Pelosi and the rest? Hypocrites all of 'em...it's funny the only ones who raise a stink are the conservatives, but then we're probably the only ones with some set of core values..

"The decision to have a costume reveal at the end of my halftime show performance was made after final rehearsals,"

Here, hold mah beer alert.

The sad thing was that it was neither sexy nor artistic. If the guy would have pulled off her whole top and she was wearing a sexy halter top or bra, that would have been better. Also some show of Modesty on her part would have helped the illusion.

I did of course mean the editorial "you" and not "you" personally.

Any publicity is good publicity...I truly don't think so in this case. Maybe with a certain element, but like Roseanne Barr will always have the stain of her embarrassing National Anthem, Ms. Jackson will always have this.

As a side to this tasteless display, what has me disturbed is the melding of sports with the Rap/Pop music industry. Why in the hell MTV is putting on pregame/halftime shows is beyond me. From Nokia's, Snoop Doggie Dog venture during the NCAA football championship to this latest embrarrasment, the media has intentionally rewarded those who embrace bad behavior. And then when I see idols of mine, like Dan Marino, playing pick-up games on MTV with a collection of gansta-rappers and wannabes, I'm even more saddened; saddened in the way that both corporate America and mature adults have gravitated towards deviancy. It's time for a cultural revolution.

Personally, I think she and MTV and all the performers should be fined........Janet the Love Sponge indeed!

As Howard Stern pointed out, the FCC fined him more than a million dollars for talking about breasts. And here's Janet, who showed hers on national TV!

What? Okay, you've issues your Clintonesque non-apology apology, wherein you confess nothing.

Now drop off the edge of the earth.
