NEW YORK - CBS apologized for an unexpectedly R-rated end to its Super Bowl halftime show, when singer Justin Timberlake (news) tore off part of Janet Jackson (news)'s top, exposing her breast.
The two singers were performing a flirtatious duet to end the halftime show, and at the song's finish, Timberlake reached across Jackson's leather gladiator outfit and pulled off the covering to her right breast.
The network quickly cut away from the shot, and did not mention the incident on the air.
Timberlake said he did not intend to expose Jackson's breast.
"I am sorry that anyone was offended by the wardrobe malfunction during the halftime performance of the Super Bowl," Timberlake said in a statement. "It was not intentional and is regrettable."
Wade said CBS officials attended rehearsals of the halftime show all week, "and there was no indication any such thing would happen. The moment did not conform to CBS' broadcast standards and we would like to apologize to anyone who was offended."
The Super Bowl halftime show, which also featured P. Diddy, Nelly and Kid Rock, was produced by MTV, CBS' corporate cousin in Viacom.
"We were extremely disappointed by elements of the MTV-produced halftime show," Joe Browne, NFL executive vice president, said. "They were totally inconsistent with assurances our office was given about the content of the show.
"It's unlikely that MTV will produce another Super Bowl halftime."
MTV issued a contrite statement, saying the incident was "unrehearsed, unplanned, completely unintentional."

MTV issued a contrite statement, saying the incident was "unrehearsed, unplanned, completely unintentional."Everbody lied about the Madonna kissing, too. "Oh, it wasn't rehearsed" blah blah blah. Turns out reporters who had watched rehearsals for that said it certainly was....of course the reporters said this several days later, and did not come out immediately so as to appear to contradict anybody.
The lies get issued, the truth is obvious.

We need the five-second delay rule for "live" Super Bowl half-time performances, and producers with enough gumption to delete offending material. All we need is for everybody who was offended by the half time show to not watch next year's super bowl. It would just take one time.

Believe you me, I know from gladiator outfits, and that weren't no gladiator outfit. Gladiators don't wear red ruffled thingies underneath.

But doesn't CBS stand for "Crotch & Breast Shots"?

Timberlake should be charged with sexual assualt or, at a minimum, creating a hostile work environment under the sexual harrassement laws, and not paid for his performance. If the act was contrived, Jackson should be charged with indecent exposure.

The NBA and NFL have their half time "Shows".
The NHL and NASCAR do not.
I will spend my money on the "No Shows".

well if MTV isn't gonna produce any more half time shows, then next year we might actually see something with a little class? Yea......like Lawrence Welk maybe??!!
I guess I am the only one that really liked it. I thought it was the best half time show in a long time.
As for Justin pulling off part of Janet's top.......well, I didn't see any nip. I thought it was part of the show.
Oh well. Can't please everyone.
But I really enjoyed it and didn't think it lasted LONG enough.
If anyone was offended by this, don't EVER watch Wild On! Goodness!

That's good... but not the real answer. The real answer is next year no one watches the Super Bowl at all. That's the message they'll understand. My annual nerd joke was again excecuted:
"Some game, huh"?
"What game? ..what..Let me guess. The Celtics got a home run in the last period?"
Amazing how close to blasphemy it seems to many people...

MTV and CBS should SUE these two. Janet and Justin won't be able to survive their legal fees defending this one.
They clearly breached their contract and caused great loss of revenue for future Super Bowls to MTV and made CBS look like a bunch of morons, even suggesting they buy the "it was an accident" excuse. Liars.
Sue them!

They should be apologizing for the entire show. Why do they think America would want to watch that crap?

Yes, the choice is either Janet/Justin or Lawrence Welk.
There's no such thing as a fun, wholesome pop entertainment that people of all ages can enjoy.
Just Janet or Lawrence...

I am so time stressed that I was wondering if their is any talk about Kid Rock wearing the flag. It was clear it was a real flag with a slit cut out to wear as a poncho...when that happened I thought for sure that was going to be the big story until Janets boob was accidentaly exposed.

That's right...it was part of the show, and if you want to see someone topless, then go to the local stip bar..NOT a family event.

Did you suffer a traumatic incident whilst watching a Lawrence Welk show once upon a time or what?
Boring, perhaps. Offensive, no.
I don't get why you cite two extremes and say those are the choices.
To: pseudo-ignatius
The whole thing was completely intentional and any of them that says otherwise is a liar.

This picture is actually the most telling. Notice the fact she has a red lace bra underneath her outfit's left breast and not underneath the outfit's right breast.
This shows she planned this all along. I actually am not sure about how much Justin knew what was going to happen, though. He pulled off the cup and kept singing, and did a double-take when he finally looked down and saw the exposed breast. I think he thought she'd have a bra on, like you can see poking out on the left side of Janet's top.
In the end, this all was a publicity stunt to get people to watch the Grammy's next week, where Janet is performing. Gee...the Grammy's are being broadcast by CBS. Isn't that a coincidence...
To: alisasny
Yes, there were a lot of comments about the flag too. Check the big thread in Breaking News.

If you ever have children, don't complain when some 14 year old boy rips your daughters shirt off in public. After all, he saw Timberflake do it.
And you certainly shouldn't take offense if it's your son who does it because as you mention, you can't please everyone.
Are you sure there wasn't supposed to be a wink thing in your post?
