Look, honey, I was typing it in a hurry. I know enough about ATkins and I feel if people want to use it, fine. The "Adkins" (as you and others who have never thoroughly researched the diet call it) diet is understood by more people who have no understanding of it than any other diet. Katie Couric has told them all they need to know and further investigation is unnecessary. It is "general knowledge" that this diet is "extreme" and going to kill you. Never mind that Dr. "Adkins", who had been on this diet for decades, died while walking to work at 72 years old.

If you want to do the Atkins diet, then do it. Don't expect everyone to share your enthusiasm for it.

The news is reporting that Atkins weighed 258 pounds when he died and had heart problems. I would be careful, if I were you.

The news is reporting that Atkins weighed 258 pounds when he died and had heart problems. I would be careful, if I were you. He had a viral heart problem, not weight or diet related. As a matter of fact, one of the symptoms of the infection is bloating/weight gain. He was fit and healthy before the virus.

In fact, I hear they're telling Adkins folks to cut back on the portions of meat they're eating because of the fat. That was the New York Times making things up again, as usual. The Atkins folks have denied saying any such thing.
People have been doing Atkins for 30 years and not one medical study has ever shown that it is harmful.

The 'skinny' now is that he weight 258 pounds when he died and had heart trouble. Just be careful.

The 'skinny' now is that he weight 258 pounds when he died and had heart trouble. Just be careful. See my #284. His weight gain was related to a viral heart condition that was not diet related. But since that doesn't fit the agenda of the anti-Atkins crowd, they just trumpet about the heart condition and the weight, attempting to imply that the diet was the cause.

You are correct. Eat less exercise more. Avoid the refined sugar, rice, and flour. The problem with our culture is simply we spend too much time watching TV, and the TV is bombarding us with pretty pictures of appetizing bad food. I guess the GOVERNMENT should make it easier for the market place to market healthier products. Say add sin tax to chocolate, refined sugar, ice cream, refined rice, white bread,.....and subsidize green leafy vegetables, meat, whole wheat flour, fruits,.....Tax the heck out of the TV commercials for "bad" food, impose varieties on fast food restaurants......
Well, well, I know that the free people will hate what I just said. And, I am for freedom of choice too, however, it is difficult for children, and grown ups to fight the temptations of the TV commercials. It was difficult to find a good nutritional meal at a fast food restaurant until recently. I exercise daily, and watch little TV. My body fat is 9%. Hence, I do not need the freedom bunch to tell me that I should control my impulses. The thing is all these children, and adults who spend 4 to 10 hours a day in front of the TV, and their pantry is full of potato chips, and other unhealthy junk food are at the mercy of the organized food corporations, which spend millions on making their poisonous products appealing to the pallets/brain.
Since the public does not have the time to shop around for a healthier food, and since it is bombarded with commercials for doughnuts, pizza, ice cream, chocolate,......therefore, people like the surgeon general, who are being paid to think about our health should take some initiatives.

I'm not particulary anti-Atkins, but just want people to be careful. Get checkups, blood work, etc. to be sure you aren't doing anything to yourself that you shouldn't. My best friend's cholesterol actually went up when she was on the diet and she quit. Not everybody's body can take this kind of diet.

TV is a curse so much of the time. I know when the Milky Way commercial comes on, I forage in the freezer for one of those mini bars my husband loves. I got pretty much off of white refined anything. I use something called 'real salt' instead of the regular, and watch the sodium content in stuff. You can't tell what you're eating in restaurants any more, so we've cut back on that, too. If I don't take care of my diet, I will die. That's how it is right now. I was very sick for about three years and TV, refined foods, lack of exercise and too many sweets almost killed me.

Of course I'm being careful -- anyone changing their diet or exercise plan significantly should keep an eye on what's happening.
As far as the protein/kidney issue, I purchased ketone testing strips to ensue that I wasn't getting too much ketosis -- I fell into ketosis so easily that I have to force myself to make sure I go over 15 carbs a day to prevent from going too high. I haven't had blood work done yet, but I will be seeing my doctor next month for a full checkup. I also understand that Atkins will not work for some people -- specifically those with kidney problems.
On the other hand, in five weeks, I've lost significant weight and size. My energy level is up and I sleep better. I actually don't eat significantly more protein than I did prior to staring the plan, the big change is that I am not concerned about the amount of fat that I eat. The other major difference is that instead of eating chips, candy, bread, and pasta, I'm eating vegetables (mostly the green leafy types), cheese, nuts, and seeds.

Thanks for understanding my points. I am used to the foaming at the mouth bunch on this board attacking me for insinuating "government" control.
As we know, there is good government control, and there is bad one. The good ones will favor good things for the public at large, and the bad ones will favor the interest of lobbyists.

I am having hamburger steak and onions fried in olive oil in a few minutes. I love this way of eating.
Olive Oil?
Oh wait, that's "Olive Oyl"... nevermind. |

I'm glad when people find a diet that works for them. Personally I've had great luck with the
Amish diet.

Hehe, in my case the works isn't nearly as hard for me as watching what I eat.
Over the years I probably tried 10-12 different diets, none of which gave me lasting success and then I just started exercising more. That was 70 pounds and 22 years ago. I haven't deviated over my "ideal" weight +/- 2 pounds since.
It works for me, in my particular case everything else seemed to have some downside.
But I'm a firm believer that there's no single diet that's made for everyone. In my case I suspect that Atkins would clobber my cholesterol and I wouldn't have nearly the carbs I need but it sure seems like it works for a lot of people.
To: Proud_texan
Wow! You've managed to keep 70 pounds off for over 20 years?
Congratulations!
When is your book coming out? ;)

Haha, I think there are probably only a finite number of books the market can absorb on any one topic and diet books have achived that number.
