More Carbs, Less Weight (A diet that turns the Atkins plan on its head shows promise)

Carbohydrates may not be the real villains in the hard-fought battle against the bulge after all.

A small group of older men and women actually lost weight on a complex carbohydrate diet that let them eat until they were full without counting calories.

"This runs counter to the current cult of carbohydrate aversion," says William J. Evans, senior author of the National Institute on Aging-funded study that appears in the Jan. 26 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine.

Losing weight, of course, has become the great American pastime -- and with good reason.

"If someone is overweight with a BMI [body mass index] of 25 or greater, they are at risk for more disease including cancer, heart disease and diabetes," says Samantha Heller, senior clinical nutritionist at New York University Medical Center in New York City. "Even losing a few pounds can help lower blood pressure and help regulate and manage cholesterol levels."

There has been some evidence that low-fat, complex carbohydrate (think whole grains) diets coax the pounds off. But it wasn't clear if they might work because overall food consumption was lower or what the metabolic effects of less fat were.

For the new study, 34 people aged 55 to 80 with impaired glucose tolerance (a risk factor for type 2 diabetes) were randomly assigned to one of three 12-week programs. The control program was a "typical American diet" of 41 percent fat, 14 percent protein and 45 percent carbohydrates. The remaining individuals followed a low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet (18 percent fat, 19 percent protein, 63 percent carbohydrate) either with or without aerobic exercise.

Participants, who were not told this was a weight-loss study, came to the University of Arkansas' nutrition, metabolism and exercise laboratory center in the morning for breakfast. The rest of their food for the day was then provided to them.

"We gave all of our subjects half again as much food as we felt they needed to maintain their weight, 150 percent of their energy requirements," says Evans, who is a professor in the Donald W. Reynolds Department of Geriatrics at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Medicine. They were told they could eat as much as they wanted. Any food that was uneaten was brought back and weighed.

Breakfast in the diet group consisted of cereal or oatmeal. Snacks consisted of lemon pudding, popcorn and crispbread crackers.

Participants in the low-fat, high-carb groups lost weight and those who exercised lost even more. The average weight loss was almost 11 pounds.

These differences were seen despite the fact that all participants had the same calorie intake. "We were able to demonstrate that subjects could experience weight loss with no decrease in calorie intake, only a decrease in fat intake," Evans says.

Metabolic rates were the same for all participants as well.

"There is really very little evidence that humans actually turn carbohydrate into fat," Evans explains. "How much fat we have is by and large the product of over- or under-eating fat or increasing the burning of fat as fuel."

Why is it, then, that the protein-focused Atkins diet also produces weight loss?

"What happens when you reduce carbohydrate intake is that your appetite is greatly suppressed. So as long as your carbohydrate intake is extremely low, you're not as hungry, and you end up eating fewer calories and losing weight," Evans says.

"The big problem with Atkins is once you decide that you've lost enough weight and want to eat bagels and bread and pasta again, suddenly you're hungry again and start eating a lot more food. The rate of recidivism of Atkins is extraordinarily high," he adds.

While Evans' study focused on complex carbohydrates such as whole grains, his current research is finding similar results with simple carbohydrates such as white bread and pasta. "In my opinion, it's the low fat rather than the type of carbohydrate," Evans says. But that study is not yet completed.

It's also important to note the just-published study was very small, with only 11 or 12 people in each group. "It needs to be repeated with bigger groups and more specific measurement of food intake," Heller says. "It's not conclusive."

With the industry now coming out with low carb breads and pasta you do not have to give these up entirely.

Our local Food Pavilion is baking a low carb 3g net digestible bread that is very good.

This is apparently the currently-fashionable explanation for why Atkins works. There was an article in the Telegraph last week saying the same thing (I don't think it was the same guy).

I don't buy it. When I did Atkins, I definitely ate an increased amount of food and lost weight. No doubt I'd have lost more if I'd cut back, but I totally pigged during Induction, and it still worked.

Eat smaller protions and exercise.

There, I should make 20 million dollars, because this is the best diet.

But, Americans, as fat as we are and demanding of instant results, don't want to put the effort into it. We want to eat anything and everything without gaining any weight.

I was at the grocery store (Safeway) last night, and they had a whole display of low-carb foods - chips, pastas, soups, breads, etc... Plus, all of the fast food restaurants out here are now serving low-carb meals, including KFC, Burger King, Carl's Jrs, Subway, even TGI Fridays.

Sure, sneak this into the last paragraph. Oh, by the way, the sample size in this "study" was so ridiculously small that no conclusions, whatsoever, can be drawn from any of the results. And also by the way, the fact that these people volunteered to be in this removes any likelihood, however small it might have been, of randomness in the population to begin with. Ah, pseudo-science is fun, isn't it?

Is anyone else getting annoyed by the endless stream of Radio and TV commercials for cortaslim?

Dr. Seenamone and his "mysterious" unseen partner Dr. Talbott. If Dr. Talbott is so fired up about this drug where is he? Probably in the federal pen for medical malpractice or in Costa Rica dodging the IRS.

"It not your fault that your overweight!" Well then who in blazes fault is it?!? Did the devil make you eat that entire box of ho-ho's?
Well with our "magic" pill you can eat enough to feed a third world country, sit on the couch all day and STILL lose weight. To blazes with personal responsibility, after all it's not YOUR fault...

This drug is MUCH too powerful for the casual dieter, translation: If your even a little portly you'll have the body of a greek god in no time!! It's like a car dealer telling the man going through a mid-life crisis that a particular sportscar is much to powerful for him, you just sold 1 car.

The latest radio ads that seem to play endlessly through Rush Limbaughs show on the local affiliate attack the low carb diet trend as being dangerous and causeing a litany of bad things to happen. But the solution is the "safe and effective" magic pill. Like a unregulated dietary supplement is SOOOO safe..."

(sorry -- had to rant)

I can nearly eliminate fat and go carbs, and I will steadily gain weight (fat.)

I can eat all the fat I want and just watch the carbs and I will maintain or lose weight.

My BMI is ridiculous, like 37. You'd think I looked like Jabba the Hut. I have a 34" waist.

Insurance companies will barely touch me. My heart rate is low, my blood pressure is low, my cholesterol is low. The problem I have is that any exercise will make me put on muscle like crazy. I can barely look at weights and I have to go up a shirt size. BMI is a fraud so leftists can carp about our diets and insurance companies can charge more for insurance.

Jack Lalane was on Cavuto. At 89 years old, he looks terrific. Lalane said he stopped eating sugar and white flour when he was young. (Sounds like a form of Atkins) Of course, we know he's an excercise guru. He suggested we never eat anything man made. Jack said to live to live, and that means eating right and exercising.

The fattest I've ever been was as a vegan. I ate starch in high quantity and couldn't understand why I could plow through a bag of potato chips and still feel hungry.

The South Beach diet has cured that little problem, and painlessly trimmed 14 pounds off me in the last month. Combine that with a visibly-shrinking beer gut, and I am a happy camper (and still vegetarian, which is not realistic for Atkins).
