"Police hoping to find witness"

By Michael Baker
The Facts

Published January 29, 2004

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "FREEPORT — Police are asking for any help they can get in solving the Friday night shooting of a BASF security guard.

“We’re looking for anybody to come forward who might have been driving in that area that night at that time who could provide us with information,” Freeport Police Chief Henrietta Gonzalez said.

The guard, Robbie House, 43, of Angleton, was shot while on patrol at FM 1495 and High-way 36, near BASF’s ammonia terminal, about 9:15 p.m. Friday. House told police he had approached a parked pickup and questioned the driver, who said he was photographing the lights. The driver shot House in the shoulder as he turned to speak into his radio, police said.

But House, who has since been released from Brazosport Memorial Hospital, appeared on a televised news conference Monday, saying FBI agents have accused him of shooting himself.

Gonzalez said police believe House’s story. The police description of the culprit has not changed: an unshaven man with dark complexion, dark hair, a mustache and an accent believed to be Middle Eastern."

"Judge rules DMV can refuse ID" (matricula consular)
The News & Observer ^ | January 30, 2004

Posted on 01/31/2004 2:00:14 AM PST by sarcasm

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "A Wake County Superior Court judge on Friday refused to stop the state from enforcing new rules that would make it harder for Mexican immigrants to get driver licenses and state-issued identification cards.

Wake Superior Court Judge Donald Stephens said the state Division of Motor Vehicles had the authority to stop accepting Mexican identification cards and other forms of ID without holding public hearings. Two Latino groups filed suit Thursday to try to block the state from enforcing the rules until the public had a chance to comment on them.

Barring a successful appeal, the state will begin enforcing the new ID requirements on Monday.

The change aims to prevent criminals and possibly terrorists from using fake documents to get licenses or ID cards from the DMV. Several forms of ID, including birth certificates from countries other than the United States or Canada, will no longer be accepted.

The change that has packed DMV offices statewide would bar the use of Mexican voting cards as well as the "matricula consular," ID cards issued by Mexican consulates that are often carried by illegal immigrants. With a deadline looming today, immigrants have been lining up for hours in hopes of getting a license or ID card."

I have a "what if" scenario for all of you. With the news of Russia holding nuclear war exercises in the upcoming weeks, what would happen if a missle was "accidently" fired at the US. Upon launch they"Russia" would immediatly get on the horn and say it was an accident. Being an accident the US probably would not respond in kind however, it would cause chaos and havoc throughout the country. We would go into economic shock, and if AQ is indeed present, would be the perfect time to act. I know this requires tinfoil but still an interesting scenario, stuff novels are made of.

"Maryland Voting System Vulnerable to Hackers"
Updated: Friday, Jan. 30, 2004 - 4:12 PM

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Computers that Maryland voters will use in the March primary contain "vulnerabilities that could be exploited by malicious individuals," according to programmers who tested the equipment.

Hackers could easily compromise 16,000 touch-screen computers in precincts statewide, Michael Wertheimer of RABA Technologies told a state legislative committee on Thursday."

Of course the FBI would accuse him of that, it is to shake him up to see if he is lying, install doubt of belief, then will ask him to take lie detector test, just to be sure. That way they can be sure of the possible threat.

New Concern Is Expressed About Flights From Abroad
By ERIC LICHTBLAU

Published: January 31, 2004

WASHINGTON, Jan. 30 — American officials said on Friday that they had received new information in recent days pointing to the possibility of an international hijacking and were considering the grounding of several flights from England and France over the weekend as a result.

Officials said terrorist intelligence that they considered "specific and credible" raised particular concerns about British Airways flights from London to Washington and Air France flights. Officials would not disclose the Air France flights but said they were not on the Paris-to-Los Angeles route on which flights were grounded in December.

PRISONS TO MOSQUES
Hate Speech and the American Way
By ADAM LIPTAK

Published: January 11, 2004

RACIAL and religious hate speech is criminal in much of the world, but it flourishes in the United States. Even Saudi Arabia, for instance, has been signaling that it will cut back on the diplomatic visas it issues to militant Wahhabi clerics, who sometimes praise suicide attacks. But militant Wahhabism and other religious doctrines advocating violence are freely preached in the United States. It happens in mosques and churches, in schools and, especially, in prisons.

American tolerance for even the sort of dissent that calls for the violent overthrow of the government and for racial hate is unique. It is not absolute; direct advocacy of immediate violence can be a crime. Still, the international war crimes tribunal in Tanzania that convicted three men last month for using a radio station and newspaper to incite genocide in Rwanda called American law "the most speech protective" in the world and declined to use its near-absolute standards as a model.

I had wondered about Russia's desperation and fall from power, I thought that was the case? My biggest fear was because they were in such dire straits and so broke and desperate they would sell off what they had to say Iran etc. Wonder what Condi's feelings are about the country she once loved?
