I agree that he can lose. Most of my friends, lifelong conservatives, are ready to sit this one out because of Bush's failure to protect American jobs and borders, and his crazy fiscal policies. The immigration proposal was the last straw for many.

Did you ever think that maybe you are, yourself on a personal campaign to see him defeated? I don't see that at all where I am at. In fact, I see the opposite. I see huge numbers of moderate Democrats coming over to our side, and Republicans here don't even know this forum exists and they are quite happy with his performance.
Sorry, when I said "our" I excluded you.

Most of my friends to continue to support the President because he has lowered the unemployment rate even in the face of an unprecendented attack on our nation, spectacular bursting of bubbles in the stock market, and historic reforms in corporate governance including arrests and convictions of corporate bosses.
He has humanely proposed dealing with illegal immigration, realizing that the nation needs continues labor and social security funding while future privatization will hopefully be implemented.
He has successfully defended this nation even with the most open borders in the world and in the face of 8 years of inaction and chaos at the federal level.
He has maintained his conservative positions on most moral issues of the day and has made progress on reforming health care, eventually privatizing major portions of it.
He has continued to push privatiiton of social security, which Chile has already successfully done...in short he has been a spectacular president in the face of a peculiar kind of criticism from the right and a more perverse attacks from the the Left.

All my friends are lifelong conservatives, and while we won't sit anything out, we are wondering what's up with the immigration & Man to Mars stuff.
What worries me are the 20% in the middle who don't always vote, and are easily swayed if they do. Comments from moderates at my office (people who voted for Reagan AND Clinton - go figure) are not real pro Bush these days. You know the type, they decide who to vote for based on 30 second commercials. They were pro Bush 6 months ago, now they seem alot more neutral.

The immigration proposal was the last straw for many.I'm sad to say that I'm in that position as well. Not my choice but I'm left with no other course.

Most of my friends, lifelong conservatives, are ready to sit this one out... Somehow I doubt those who would help elect a Democrat liberal to the White House just because they are pouting over a few issues they disagree with Bush over, are either lifelong or genuine conservatives.
Guess you guys all regret that Gore didn't win in 2000.
