Rape suspect held on $1 million bail

A man suspected of nearly beating a woman to death during a rape near White Rock Lake on Friday afternoon was charged Saturday with aggravated sexual assault with a deadly weapon, authorities said.

Jose Elias, 22, of the 5400 block of Gaston Avenue, faces up to life in prison if convicted of the first-degree felony charge, authorities said. He is being held at Lew Sterrett Justice Center in Dallas in lieu of $1 million bail, jail officials said. Police suspect he used a pipe to beat the 48-year-old woman during the attack. The woman remained in critical condition Saturday with skull fractures after undergoing surgery at Baylor University Medical Center, hospital staff said.

A police officer on patrol interrupted the attack about 2:30 p.m. in the 2800 block of West Lawther Drive in a secluded area on the lake's west edge. Senior Cpl. Lester Page was on patrol when he noticed a bicycle lying near an isolated area at the park.

When the officer arrived, Mr. Elias fled on the bicycle. Police used dogs and the help of residents to track the man for three hours before apprehending him. He was caught about 6 p.m. Friday in the 6800 block of Gaston Avenue near Lakewood Country Club, officials said.

Police said they are investigating whether the man is responsible for two other rapes in the area in December. The rapes occurred near the intersection of Gaston Avenue and Munger Boulevard, near the apartments where Mr. Elias lives.

The attacks involved violence but were not as severe as the incident Friday, sexual assault investigators have said.

It is possible but you don't often see a white perp use it as the first line of defense. David Westerfield's and Scott Peterson's defense teams resort to different tactics. Bernie Getz was arguably a victim of racist prosecutors but probably not police.

It looked like he was doing his job alright. He saw that bicycle laying there and went sniffing around. He may have actually saved the woman's life, too. I hope so. She may yet not make it, being in critical condition, though.
