Bloomberg: I Don't believe 'Fat' Atkins

New York's Mayor Bloomberg, a dedicated foe of tobacco doesn't like fat either - and he thinks it was fat and not a head injury that killed diet guru Dr. Robert Atkins.

Chowing down at a New York firehouse, Bloomberg told firefighters "I don't believe that bull- s- - - - that [Atkins] dropped dead slipping on the sidewalk," Bloomberg said eating low fat bow-tie pasta, chicken and vegetables with FDNY Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta and a group of Brooklyn firefighters according to the New York Post.

Atkins, whose high protein, low carb diet is the rage across America reportedly died after he suffered severe head injuries in a fall on an icy Manhattan sidewalk last April.

When a firefighter asked the mayor what Atkins looked like when he met him, the mayor replied that "He was fat," adding that he spat out the food he was served at Atkins' home into a napkin because "it was inedible."

Dr. Stuart Trager, a consultant for Atkins, told the Post "We're baffled and dismayed by the mayor's comments. Our hope is that this was just a joke gone bad."

The low-carb, high-protein Atkins diet sparked a revolution, the Post reported, with millions of followers shunning pasta and bread for steaks and sausages. Critics have claimed the high amounts of fat in many recommended foods can lead to high cholesterol and heart attacks.

savage put what I have been saying into words the other day - the Atkins diet is a total and complete fraud - by overloading your liver with nitrogen from excess protein and eating no carbohydrates - of course you will lose weightbecuase the body is starving for proper nutrition and is overloaded on protein. Do the atkins idiot diet and you will drop dead in ten years from a toxic liver!

There isn't even any question about this. He died because of HEAD TRAUMA. Bloomin' Idiot might as well have blamed fatty foods for someone dying of a gunshot wound.

I've had it with Bloomberg. I've given him every benefit of the doubt for far too long, but this is the last straw. Elected officials should not make rude, mean-spirited personal comments about their constituents, even dead ones. Can you imagine what Atkins's family must have felt when they heard about this?

If I'm back in NYC by the next mayoral election, I'll vote for the Democrat just to get rid of this jerk, unless a real Republican comes along to challenge Bloomberg in the primary. (Which can work in New York; Dinkins beat in incumbent Ed Koch in the Dem primary in '89.)

I don't think his opinion of the diet is what's really at issue here, although an argument over that is probably what this thread will degenerate into rather soon. The issue is that the highest ranking elected official in New York City attacked a dead constituent of his out of sheer holier-than-thou meanness, and that is way, way, WAY out of line.

Mike Bloomberg is like a miniature Howard Dean. Only far less funny.
