savage put what I have been saying into words the other day - the Atkins diet is a total and complete fraud - by overloading your liver with nitrogen from excess protein and eating no carbohydrates - of course you will lose weightbecuase the body is starving for proper nutrition and is overloaded on protein. Do the atkins idiot diet and you will drop dead in ten years from a toxic liver!
the idiocy of those obsessed with losing weight without just doing it the right way - PROPER diet and excercise never cease to amaze me.

Thats the dumbest rant I've heard in a while. Aside from the intro period, once you're into the diet it's more focused on the removal of simple carbohydrates. You eat fats and proteins, but its leavened with plenty of vegetables and even complex or fibery carbohydrates. Savage is off the mark on this one and you'd think that being somewhat of an "outside of the box" thinker he'd give something that the AMA has conniptions over but can never find any negative study results to back up a bit deeper look...

You'll get flamed for sure - for some reason, FR is a well spring of Atkins disciples. I wonder if it has anything to do with common INTJ traits.

Anyhow, yes, you are correct - the whole issue is balancing caloric intake with proper excercise. Oats, potatoes, rice, pasta, fruit/veggies, no butter/margarine (olive/canola oil), moderate portions of lean meat, etc. is all anyone needs to stay in shape.

The genius of Atkins is that it appeals to people who feel compelled to eat. Compared to sweets, cookies, fries, etc. I suppose meat is better, but still, the whole point is to make eating 6 days out of 7 a task, not a joy.

Save the 7th day to pig out on anything you want, as long as you can get back on track for the next 6 days.

The Atkins diet has been around for like thirty years. At some point there should have been a wave of this happening, if you were right. It never happened.

by overloading your liver with nitrogen from excess protein

Could you present some of the evidence that has led you to this conclusion?

Atkins has been around since the 70s, yet people have not been "dropping dead" from liver toxicity....odd, no?

The basic premise of Atkins is to cut out the refined foods and sugar. How is that a bad thing?

Been saying this on many of these threads and I get beat up everytime(don't usually respond because how can you to fanatics). I remember back in 94 I had lost a good 60lbs by good old fashioned balanced diet and exercise(only took about 6 months too folks) and when people asked me how I did it(for suggestions for themselves)everyone moaned that was just "too hard" for them. Everyone wants the quick fix!

In addition to what you said, I think carb deprivation when you are active and working out is downright dangerous in the long term as well.

Oh and I've said it before, but currently I have nothing invested in any diet. I am 5 months pregnant and MUST eat balanced right now. Funny how just cutting out junk when I found out I was pregnant and increasing my water intake has lead me to lose about 5 lbs(that's right haven't gained, I've lost!) If I wasn't pregnant and added in exercise, I think I could probably count on a good 30lbs at this point without giving up a sandwich here or a bowl of pasta there.

Savage is a charlatan. There's no evidence you can 'overload your liver with nitrogen from excess protein'. Low carb. diets work, and they're good for you. And most people on Atkins also 'excercise'.

And you appear to be a complete idiot on this subject. Maybe you beter go read an Atkins book. There are plenty of carbs that you can eat, green leafy vegetables, some beans and several types of nuts.

Atkins avoids starches and sugar. Go study.

And by the way ... it works perfectly when used with exercise. Protein readily converts to muscle.
