Tancredo for president, group says
Rocky Mountain News ^ | January 21, 2004 | M.E. Sprengelmeyer

Immigration critics in Tennessee want to draft Rep. Tom Tancredo as a protest candidate in the upcoming Republican presidential primary, but don't expect the Littleton lawmaker to become their volunteer.

"A lot of people think my politics are crazy, but I'm not delusional. I don't think I'm going to be president of the United States," Tancredo said Tuesday, in response to a new committee, "Tennesseans for Tancredo," touting a write-in candidacy on the Internet.

Some immigration critics are so upset about President Bush's proposal to offer legal status to millions of illegal immigrants that they want to field a protest candidate in Republican presidential primaries in Tennessee and elsewhere.

A Web site, www.tennesseansfortancredo.com, cites the need to "make noise, collect signatures, build a grass-roots movement that attracts citizens from all walks of life and all political parties."

With or without Tancredo's approval, they hope critics of Bush's plan will write in Tancredo during state presidential contests.

Tancredo said he supports Bush on most issues besides immigration and could not see himself having much of an effect on Bush's chances.

This week, the representative launched "Team Tancredo," a political action committee to raise money for candidates who oppose amnesty for illegal immigrants.

"Tancredo for President" bumper stickers have been floating around the Internet for more than a year.

"It's a conversation starter," he said. "And the conversation usually starts with, 'Who the hell is Tom Tancredo?' ''

Don't get me wrong - I have no problem with Tancredo. I just don't understand why so many people seem to think he is the opposit of Bush on immigration, when his own proposal is substatially similar to the Bush proposal.

I know there ARE Repubs who oppose him on this. They answer to a narrower constituency than he does. Also some DemonRats.

J'Lo. Wow - now don't bother me, I have to research the Net.

Bush is just proposing granting them amnesty for having done so.

Bush hasn't granted amnesty to anyone. These guys have whatever they are holding up because of some other reason -- maybe they went through the legal process? Why don't you go find a picture of some hispanic beating a white guy -- that would be more effective.

Doesn't Tancredo's bill require the illegals to return to their country of origin and then apply for guest worker status?

If you understood the system better you would realize that voters influence legislators too.

IF enough of their constituents tell them the same thing they will listen.

IF not enough people follow the process then they will listen to special interests and the president.

"Second of all, both my parents are immigrants and he can easily say those things about me. He likes to lump all immigrants together as if we're all coming to steal his food".

If there were a nomination for the most ill thought out responses, methinks yours would be at the top of the heap. Let me point something out that you may have missed, T-A-N-C-R-E-D-O. Did you miss that, or do you only consider a select few folks here as having immigrant parents/grand parents ETC..?

Illegal is the buzzword, now unless you and yours are here in this country "illegally", you need have nothing to worry about. Most Americans are here legally, although some of my Indian(the American variety) friends would differ with me on that one.

Well Hillary and Chuck are my senators :-( Carolyn McCarthy is my congresswoman BUT I still write letters. My mother came to America as a guest worker during the Sixties when guest workers had to take civics test, get vaccine shots, etc. My dad can tell stories about the sanitation queque at Ellis Island. I think this thing would send the wrong message.

Bush hasn't granted amnesty to anyone.

I've never said he did. I said he "proposed" it. Learn to read.

These guys have whatever they are holding up because of some other reason -- maybe they went through the legal process?

So you can think for yourself. Congratulations on that important discovery.

Why don't you go find a picture of some hispanic beating a white guy -- that would be more effective.

I like the picture I posted just fine. If you want a picture of a Hispanic beating a white guy find and post it yourself.

It's anything BUT a guest worker program.

Which is my only REAL bitch about it. My father and Grandparents came thorugh Ellis Island from the Ukraine back in the 50's. I have NOTHING against legal immagrants.

Rewarding lawless behavior only makes it worth it for criminals to try more of the same. I'm really not happy about the income redistribution portions of this whereby a foriegn national will have access to our Social Security system.

Hell, at this rate, we'd be better off ANNEXING Mexico. It'd be cheaper in the long run and we'd almost double our resources.

I understand the system just fine. I also understand that the guy leading the charge is the one we have to worry about since he can stop anything with a single veto vote.

You are in a tough spot for legislators but there are other ways to help.

You can always contribute to people like Tom Tancredo, Steve King of Iowa, John Kyl of Arizona or others on the Immigration Caucus.

And you can write to the Republican party leaders explaining that you have no representation. Write letters to the editor, see if there are any groups in your state working to make changes in the illegals situation, etc.

Most Republicans are not totally against immigration or even a reasonable guest worker program. We are against people entering the country illegally.

Well, since he proposed the program and he doesn't back down, I don't think a veto is your best chance.

I suppose I should be blaming the liberals more for all the confusing code words. If things would be spelled simply, then that would make this issue a lot clearer to people including myself.

I never said it was my best chance. My best chance is to make him understand how many votes he will lose by pushing this BS.

I think Mexico should be annexed the same way we have the Marshall Islands,Puerto Rico (which really should be a state),etc. That will never happen. Fox would be out of a job, and won't be able to live high off the hog. Also, his arrogant, snotty ethnic elitism won't be welcomed by most Americans.

Doesn't Tancredo's bill require the illegals to return to their country of origin and then apply for guest worker status?

If it does, then his own website doesn't say anything about it...

requires that the system include safeguards against its use resulting in unlawful discriminatory practices;
exempts employers from civil and criminal liability for actions taken in good faith reliance on the verification system
Permits employers who seek verification of work eligibility of new hires within three days after they begin work to use such verification as a defense against employer sanctions; requires employers to obtain from each new hire either a social security number or an alien number

20,000 full-time border enforcement personnel are in the field;

BICE employees respond to every request by state and local law enforcement officers to pick up illegal aliens

Requires that the Department of Labor create an Internet-based job posting system to which all U.S. employment agencies and business may acquire password-protected access so that they can post available jobs on the system; prohibits the Labor Department from approving any labor certification applications in any industry and geographic region if the unemployment rate exceeds five percent and the percentage of new hires who are H non-immigrants exceeds 15 percent
