Immigration critics in Tennessee want to draft Rep. Tom Tancredo as a protest candidate in the upcoming Republican presidential primary, but don't expect the Littleton lawmaker to become their volunteer.
"A lot of people think my politics are crazy, but I'm not delusional. I don't think I'm going to be president of the United States," Tancredo said Tuesday, in response to a new committee, "Tennesseans for Tancredo," touting a write-in candidacy on the Internet.
Some immigration critics are so upset about President Bush's proposal to offer legal status to millions of illegal immigrants that they want to field a protest candidate in Republican presidential primaries in Tennessee and elsewhere.
A Web site, www.tennesseansfortancredo.com, cites the need to "make noise, collect signatures, build a grass-roots movement that attracts citizens from all walks of life and all political parties."
With or without Tancredo's approval, they hope critics of Bush's plan will write in Tancredo during state presidential contests.
Tancredo said he supports Bush on most issues besides immigration and could not see himself having much of an effect on Bush's chances.
This week, the representative launched "Team Tancredo," a political action committee to raise money for candidates who oppose amnesty for illegal immigrants.
"Tancredo for President" bumper stickers have been floating around the Internet for more than a year.
"It's a conversation starter," he said. "And the conversation usually starts with, 'Who the hell is Tom Tancredo?' ''

We're talking about citizens of two different countries --- giving one country the rights to do whatever they wish in a whole separate country isn't a matter of liking or disliking them. They certainly aren't giving us the right to take their jobs, move over without permission, vote in their elections --- they might like us just fine -- or maybe not --- but liking isn't the issue.

I would think anyone who really wants to prove their love should just get permission to move to Mexico and do just that.

It's not about disliking Hispanics, It is about disliking illegal immigrants!!! Many happen to be Hispanics. I dislike lawbreakers that violate our immigration laws! My wife is Philipina/Japanese and she did it the RIGHT way! It doesn't matter what race they are. If there were 11 million illegal Swede's in this country I wouldn't like them either! That doesn't mean I dislike all Swede's just the ones that are breaking the LAW! I have to check on the legality and make sure that Bush would still get the votes for President but I have a suggestion. In the national election why not write in George W. Bush for President and Tom Tancredo for Vice President! This would stop the ones that tremble and say "YOU HAVE TO VOTE FOR THE LESSER OF TWO EVILS BECAUSE ONLY EVIL CAN GET ELECTED!!"
