Girl killed in park stunt

A 16-year-old Marysville girl died in a city park Saturday as she duplicated a movie stunt that involved a merry-go-round.

The victim, whose name was not released, died in S.J. Field Park on Rideout Way before 6 p.m., after she flew off a merry-go-round and hit her head on the street pavement, according to the Marysville Police Department.

According to witnesses, seven teenagers attached a rope to a truck and wrapped it around a merry-go-round, then watched it spin as the truck pulled the rope away from the ride. The stunt was previously performed in "Jackass: The Movie."

Should it be stupicide or stupidcide? Stupicide has better flow to it, but then those most likely to be afflicted wouldn't get it.

she was a stubborn risk taker who got angry at those who tried to stop her from doing things she wanted to do.

There's more evidence for devolution than evolution.

When I was little I had weibols (toy people that were egg shaped with no appendages, weibols wobble but they don't fall down), I had the weibol merry-go-round and enjoyed using it to hurl them all over the living in a miniature version of this stunt. By the logic of the people that blame movies and games if I'd done this it would have been the weibols fault. Somebody had to drive, somebody had to tie the rope, somebody had to have no respect for centrifugal force, unless members of the Jackass crew were on hand blame belongs with the people that actually did the list of stupid things that led to this girl's death.

Actually, it sounds like the antics my husband and his 3 brothers pulled. They are all lucky to be alive!

More of the Baby-Boomer moral-liberal legacy of "You do your own thang and it's all nobody's business." and "Allow me to be irresponsible, and in return I'll allow you all to pay for the consequences of my irresponsibility." In this case, the business now belongs to the coroner who had to scrape her off the sidewalk, and the consequences belong to the friends and family left behind, as well as to the children of the future who will not have a merry-go-round in their park. In the meantime, the producers of the movie extolling irresponsibility and encouraging unneeded suffering are laughing all the way to the bank.

I watched Jackass the Movie, and didn't attempt any of the stunts after seeing it.

I had performed some similar stunts when I was young (with varying degrees of success), but can only cite Wiley Coyote (super genius) and Moe, Larry and Curly as influences. The Jackass crew hadn't even been born yet.

The driver probably has a 5 cent insurance policy. And this might be excluded under the towing and stunting exclusions.

The town will get hit for installing the merry go round and the hard concrete around it. They should have installed airbags or giant nets around it to catch flying children.

How long before the candles and flowers show up?

The full article stated someone had put a potted plant on the spot. Ironic, eh?

This reminds me of how painful it is to watch such things as "Real TV", etc. It pains me to think how stupid and careless some can be.

They were great toys. Projectiles that looked like people, almost all of my weeble playing involved them flying through the air. And they could take a beating too, never broke one.

When you outlaw merry-go-rounds, only outlaws will have merry-ro-rounds.

She made it 24 yards according to the article. That's a lot of airbags.

From the article:

We all told her not to do it," said Royster, who gathered with other friends in the park Sunday to remember the victim.

Obviously not -- somebody drove the truck.

Royster and another friend ran over to assist the victim, who landed in the street about 24 yards away from the ride.

That is an incredibly long way to be tossed from something that sits about a foot off the ground. Sounds like the truck driver didn't spare the accelerator pedal.

There's a boy who needs to have an extended tour of the jail.

I think a lot of people are missing the real point...was there a label warning about the risk of death on the merry-go-round? If not, both the manufacturer and the park will be sued for big bucks for negligence. Was the access to the rides carefully controlled? Did everyone involved sign the appropriate waivers?

The really scary thing, was that my sarcasm is dangerously close to reality.

This quote from the whole article
"The teens did this several times before they lengthened the first rope with a second rope and tied it to the merry-go-round, said Andrew Royster, 18, who witnessed the accident. That's when the victim climbed on board, he said."

If at first you don't succeed , try, try again.
And they didn't have enough common sense to realize what could happen? At their age they ought to have enough knowledge to 'think' through the possible results of their actions. Wonder if they learned enough 'not' to do it again.

And what about the parents? Honey where are you going? Who are you going with? What are you going to be doing while you're there? How long do you plan to be out?

But a parent must know and care whether the answers coming from their child are truthful.

Boy oh boy but that reincarnation stuff has a quick turn-around time. I guess she's ready for another ride.
