LEE & JACKSON MONUMENTS VANDALIZED IN RICHMOND VA.
e-mail | Ernest Bower

Couldn't find this posted here yet. I got an email from the publisher of a well known Civil War magazine who related that this morning it was discovered that the statues of Robert E. Lee and Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson in Richmond, Virginia had been vandalized last night.

The damage was discovered this morning as ceremonies were being prepared for Lee-Jackson Day.

If it is a well know publication why not source this beyond an e-mail from someone unnamed?

When does the looting and burning start in protest of this?

Why does it matter. Are you suggesting that this is a hoax?

Well, at least Grant and Jackson can be thankful they weren't buried in New York City:

The Richmond Times-Dispatch online has no news regarding this incident.

We honor Shelia Jackson-Lee every year. It's great. Lots of parades and sausages.

Hehehe...I googled the topic and about 50% of the hits were actually for Sheila Jackson Lee. But I couldn't find a good explanation of why Lee and Jackson are honored, and for how long this has been going on.

Well, we had a little event here in the South beginning around 1861. Jackson and Lee played a big part in it.

I would wager that Lee-Jackson Day would date back to no earlier than 1863. Until then, they were both alive.

I have not googled this so I do not know the history of Lee Jackson Day.

I can only say that it has existed in Virginia at least since my youth and it was observed by people who respected an honorable heritage which now is being distorted and will be remorselessly disparaged until it is repealed.

White people are not allowed to celebrate, or commemorate their history anymore. It is as simple as that.

Over 100,000 people turned out for the unveiling of the statue, 1901 I think.

I stand corrected - I poked around the Times-Dispatch site and didn't find it.

It was an email sent privately from the publisher to a CW listserve and was not from the magazine itself. I didn't think it was appropriate to directly mention the name of the magazine or the indivisual who sent it without his permission.
