NOW Outraged by Bush's Underhanded Appointment of Pickering

January 16, 2004

"The National Organization for Women is outraged by George W. Bush's installation of Charles Pickering on the federal appeals court while Congress is in recess," said NOW President Kim Gandy. "We're no longer surprised by the underhandedness of this President—Bush apparently thinks that he can act unilaterally wherever and whenever he pleases."

"NOW has vigorously opposed Pickering's nomination to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals for more than two years, and the Senate Judiciary Committee rejected this foe of women's rights once before," said Gandy. "We will certainly work to ensure that this unmerited appointment is overturned when the next Congress takes office in January 2005."

Pickering, a district court judge from Mississippi, has a long record of opposing civil rights and civil liberties, demonstrating significant judicial activism from the bench. He was an opponent of the Equal Rights Amendment and has expressed his support for a constitutional amendment banning abortion. As a state senator, Pickering repeatedly voted against measures that would expand electoral opportunities for African Americans after passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965.

"Bush's total disregard for the Democratic members of Congress who rightfully blocked Pickering's nomination, his disregard for the women of this country and for democracy in general are appalling," said Gandy. "All the more reason for women's rights supporters to get active and to vote Bush out of office in November."

I think I'm going to try a different reply to idiot fanatics complaining about partial birth infanticide.

I may even ask first if they advocate later termination as many of their philosophical bent have advocated--say a few days or weeks to see if the child is going to be worth the bother to keep around or not.

And then note:

"Well, given your contributions to our land, it's obvious your mother made a mistake in not exercising her rights to infanticide! Would you care to volunteer now to correct her error? Clearly your breathing air and taking up space is a real drag on the planet! Think of it as the 'Green thing to do!' Just think, you could start a whole new movement--VOLUNTEERS 2 RIGHT MISSED INFANTICIDES!"

Actually, perhaps we could set up

A MORE MODEST PROPOSAL.

"You could volunteer in a setting which might decrease violence and keep those dastardly aggressive hunters off the streets. You could volunteer on Dr No's Island. Think of the exileration of the chase. Think of the thrill of going out in a blaze or blast of primeval glory as the hunter practices a long range shot. Besides, you could be helping the war on terror. I hear target practice is a good thing!"

Anything that causes NOW to be "outraged" is good for society. This holds esspecially true if the brainsick Kim Gandy feels the need to clack her dentures

KIM GUMP?

NOW happens. Stupid is as Gandy does. Step away from the box of chocolates, Kim.

Most of us hope that you have under estimated the 2004 senate elections and presidential elections in 2004 in your two paragraphs below.

"Gandy and her cohorts have their work ct out for them in 2005. With the vacating of five Democrat seats in the south (LA, FL, SC, GA, NC) and the likelihood of 4, if not all 5 turning GOP, the ability to filibuster judicial appointees will be close to impossible."

"Also, if Bush wins overwhelmingly in 2004, it will appear even more ludicrous than it does now to claim Bush's nominees are not in the mainstream."

Your last paragraph will be our battle cry after GW's election in 2004.

Channel 5 news/Chicago had story about the Pickering appointment last night. The story was actually an editorial about how evil President Bush was for abusing the constitutional process.

"President Clinton, in a recess appointment, named Bill Lann Lee as Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights of the Department of Justice Aug. 3. Lee, who has been serving as acting assistant attorney general since December 1997, will continue in the position until the end of Clinton’s term this January."

I wonder if NOW protested this recess appointment by Clinton...not. I do wonder how such partisan organizations qualify for non-tax status in terms of donations.

This is true. But, while it's OK right now, we don't want 'em outraged at election time -- it only encourages them to vote!

Have we always had to have a majority of 60, or has this been a recent development (i.e., the past 2-5 years)? I'm guessing the Democrats changed this when they started losing Senate seats.

The dems should be grateful to Bush for assuaging their fears about his making lifetime judicial appointments.

Ode on Math, dedicated to Kim Gandy

I think it's just dandy, Kim Gandy..
I love how OUR President works

The Dems said,
"It's wrong... a lifetime's too long,"

This judge got one year.

Don't be jerks.

I don't understand why Bush is stopping with Pickering. He should give Estrada a call and see if he is still interested...Get Estrada, Priscilla Owen, Janice Rogers Brown, and all the rest on the courts asap.

I'm with you. If the Democrats are intent on blocking normal people in order to pander to the kooks that pay their meal tickets, then we have to use whatever method available.
