"This has Karl Rove (search) written all over it," Napolitano speculated. Why do these folks think that President Bush can't even blink his eyes without being told to do so by Kark Rove?

"A man who defended cross-burning does not deserve elevation to the bench," said Sen. Charles Schumer D-N.Y., who led the opposition to Pickering in the Senate Judiciary Committee. In case anyone missed this. Kerry also made some choice remark, calling Pickering a notable supporter of cross-burning, or some such nonsense. Gotta love it.

After the general reaction from conservatives over the prez' immigration policy proposal, Pickering's appt is most definitely welcomed after the senate RATS held up his appt for two years or better. W will score points with this one.

"this recess appointment is a finger in the eye to all those seeking fairness and bipartisanship in the judicial nominations process," Schumer said" I got a finger for you Chuckie......

"As the New Year began, many of us had hoped the president would adopt a more bipartisan approach in his selection of judges. Instead, this recess appointment is a finger in the eye to all those seeking fairness and bipartisanship in the judicial nominations process," Schumer said in a written statement. There's no pleasing Sen. Chuck Gloomer.
He's repeatedly said his main concern about Bush's nominees is that Federal Judges serve for life.
Chuck should be happy that Pickering's appointment is for one year!!
Buck up, Chuck.

Whoa, wait a minute. I've heard talk show host after talk show host say the President didn't do recess appointments because he was above that "dirty" process. So which way is it?
To: joesbucks
It's obvious. It's just too bad the other judges he offered appointments turned him down. That would have really set off the left.

Democratic senators had filibustered Pickering's nomination, accusing him of racism, and saying he supported segregation while a young man and held anti-voting rights and anti-abortion positions while a state lawmaker. Ask Byrd. He'll know. He was there.

Pickering sworn in to 5th Circuit
The Associated Press
1/16/2004, 7:08 p.m. CT
Jackson (AP) Federal judge Charles Pickering joined the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals of tonight (Friday) hours after President Bush bypassed Congress to put him on the bench.
Pickering, 66, took the oath of office from fellow Appeals Judge Rhesa Barksdale at the federal courthouse in Jackson.
Joining Pickering for the swearing in were a host of family members, including son U.S. Rep.Chip Pickering, who actively campaigned for his father's appointment to the bench.
Pickering becomes the third Mississippian on the 5th Circuit, joining Barksdale and Judge E. Grady Jolly.
Pickering declined to answer specific questions about what he had been through over two years, other than to tell the crowd "it had been a long journey."
