JOINT PRESS RELEASE BY

FREE REPUBLIC LLC & CITY OF FRESNO

On September 12, 2003, the City of Fresno’s Human Relations Commission issued a news release describing Free Republic LLC as a “hate group” and accusing it of threatening violence towards minority groups. As a result of this, on September 22, 2003, Free Republic LLC filed a claim with the City of Fresno, which was a procedural first step in filing a lawsuit for defamation. Free Republic LLC and the City of Fresno announce that this dispute has been fully resolved.

The City of Fresno officially retracts the press release and acknowledges that the City had no basis for referring to the Free Republic as a hate group or accusing them of making threats against minorities. The City of Fresno also wishes to announce that Debbie Reyes, the Chair of its Human Relations Commission has resigned from her position, effective January 2, 2004.

I think the retraction is a positive enough victory.

A retraction has not yet been presented where is would do us some good. Our attorney had to squeeze the City to get them to put in in their news release website page. The retraction part of our win is still rather empty but we are working on it.

There is a difference between “accepting government money” and forcing the perpetrator of a serious libel to compensate you financially as well as apologizing for their slur.

FreeRepublic is not on the government dole here.

Putting the perpetrator in jail is not a reasonable alterative.

I plugged it into an online translator. I would have cut and pasted the result, but it was a wonky translation and I didn't feel it deserved the time and effort. Roughly, it discussed the dispute between Jerry Duncan and Dr Kapoor.

Did anyone read the editorials in the Bee today? There are two letters to the editor that trash FR about the lawsuit.

I would post them but I am HTML challanged. One of these days one of you is going to have to teach me how to do all that fun stuff.

You don't need to know HTML. I only know how to bold, italicize, and start new paragraph. Everything else, I just t cut and past from the source. If you don't have any tags in your post, all you have to do is space down to make new paragraphs.

And I'll repeat that it would not have cost the City or the taxpayers a single red cent had they just done the right thing in the first place and published an apology and retraction and fired the person responsible.

That is exactly what we all wanted.

I think that is a paper from April, 2003.

I can't read it but it looks like it is the spanish version of the news when Jerry Duncan sent e-mail about a dirty bomb.

I always put junk mail in the trash. These people have what is called the dinosaur syndrome, - big ass and a little head!
