ALL the good news is going the GOP's way today !!:

Supreme Court won't block TEXAS GOP's redistricting plan

Excerpt:

WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court refused Friday to block a hard-fought Republican redistricting plan in Texas that could cost Democrats as many as six seats in Congress.

The justices will announce later this year whether they will consider an appeal from congressional Democrats and others who claim that the map dilutes minority voting strength. In the meantime, they rejected an emergency appeal that sought to stop the state from using the new boundaries in this year's elections.

And the GREAT thing is that this makes it a front page issue for the State of the Union Address on Tuesday.

Nice shot, Mr. President.

I hope President Bush has the moxie to really stick it to the Demon/cRATS in the Senate. He can do so by making enough recess appointments to fill ALL the vacancies on all the district and appeals courts and wait for the Demon/cRATS to howl. But that would mean they would have to admit they have been blocking the nominations of several hundred "right-wing extremist judges" for about 4 years now.

Pickering's term on the court will automatically end at the end of the current session of the Senate--Dec 2004. So technically, Pickering will be on the bench one year. Thereafter, his position will be open again.

Not if we pick up more Senate seats in the '04 election. Then we can get the 60 votes and confirm anyone. IIRC, there are 4 seats up for grabs.

Plus if Pickering serves with integrity and dignity during the year, which of course he will, the dems will look foolish opposing him -- after all, "look at the fine job he's done for the past year."

So, Pickering will get paid, after all.

Take your time,, go back and read the entire thing again. I don't think he qualifies for pay as the section (2) is talking about the end of the session. This session of Congress doesn't end until the end of 04 or Jan 05 when the 109th is installed.

You nailed it! This is hilarious to do this right before the Senate goes back in session.

He is reportedly really feeling the heat from immigration proposal and that may have spurred him on to do this now. Whatever the reason, I'm thrilled he did it finally.

Good for you, Howlin. Most of us in that 91% are pretty adult about politics. We understand that no two human beings agree 100% on anything — that even with the people closest to us in our lives (parents, spouses, children) we can have vehement, even bitter disagreements and still not discard the whole person.

Most, if not all of the self-proclaimed "real" conservatives who bitch and moan about Dubya on these threads would probably have had exactly the same things to say about Ronald Reagan had FR been around in the 1980's.

Once again, FR is a place for discussion. A legitimate question that can and should be asked is the meaning and method behind Bush's action. Questioning one's motive isn't equal to flaming. If this offends or disturbs you, you have my sympathies but that's life.

Report: Bush installs Pickering on appeals court

President's move bypasses Democrats who had blocked him

03:07 PM CST on Friday, January 16, 2004

Associated Press

WASHINGTON - President Bush installed Charles Pickering on a federal appeals court Friday, bypassing Democrats who had stalled his nomination for more than two years, sources said.

Bush appointed Pickering by a recess appointment which avoids the confirmation process. Such appointments are valid until the next Congress takes office, in this case in January 2005.

Pickering, a federal trial judge who Bush nominated for a seat on the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans, has been waiting for a confirmation vote in the Senate.

Democrats have accused him of supporting segregation as a young man, and pushing anti-abortion and anti-voting rights views as a state lawmaker.

They also have said they wouldn't be able to trust Pickering to keep his conservative opinions out of his work on the federal appeals court.

Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., called the recess appointment "a finger in the eye to all those seeking fairness and bipartisanship in the judicial nominations process."

But of course, Chuckie, the RATS, and ABCCBSNBCCNNMSNBC did the "End Zone Dance" when the Rapist signed recess appointments.

Hypocrits.
