A FreeRepublic Hologram

Here's a little diddy that we at ActionAmerica.org worked up for all you FReepers out there. I hope that you enjoy it. It's a plain paper hologram, also referred to as a stereogram. I chose a red, white and blue background for obvious reasons. An explanation, with download and print instructions follows.

The image is copyrighted, but all that I require is that if you wish to make copies to pass on to others via email or to post it on your web site, you must retain the copyright notice near the upper right corner of the image and place a notice of this requirement in the email or on the web page, where it appears. Though not required, I would appreciate a FReepMail, if you should post it to a web page.

The image that you see on this page is reduced in size, to allow it to fit in your browser window, without having to resize that window. In fact, if you don't have a Mac, that generally uses wider screens or a PC with a giant screen, set to a high resolution, the full size image won't all fit on your screen at 100%, anyway. But, that shouldn't matter, for two reasons.

First, you can see the hologram, just as it is presented on this page. Second, if you want to see the larger image or print it, the underlying, full size image is actually present. All you have to do is click on the image and save it to your disk and what you will have, can be displayed in Preview, at appropriate magnification for your monitor or printed on an 8-1/2 x 11 piece of paper in landscape mode, without any loss of resolution. It is sized to take up most of a letter size page. The file is just over 300KB.

If you are familiar with these holograms, you can skip over the rest of this text and go straight to the image. If not, then here is how you view it. The trick is to focus each eye, individually, on the screen (paper), but have the gaze of both eyes meet at a point about 4 inches behind the screen (paper). The result is that each eye is focusing on a different point on the screen (paper). If that explanation does not make sense, there is a diagram following the hologram, that shows what I am talking about. This hologram is optimized for viewing at about 20 inches. In other words, that's where you should be able to get your initial focus locked on, best. Once you see the image, you will find that you can see it at quite a range of distances.

To help you focus, I have included 2 yellow dots at the bottom of the image. When you are focused properly, they will appear to be 3 (not 2) equally spaced dots and the middle dot will be crystal clear. When that middle dot is sharp, just follow the background up and the hollogram should be in focus. Here's a hint. Immediately under the copyright box is the letter "E" in the word "FREE". Further, a hint image, that shows what you should be looking for, follows the diagram, so if you don't want to see the hint, don't scroll past the bottom of the diagram, until you are ready to look at it.

Enjoy!

Here is the hint image. It's what is hidden in all that mess.

Keep on FReepin'.

Don't let your boss find out about this, he just might give you some work to do...

The boss just found out and you were right. She told me to clean the kitchen.

(I am an investor and work at home. That's why I post so irregularly and at such weird times of day.)

Those of you who could see the FreeRepublic Hologram, at the top of this thread, might find this interesting, too. Someone did a great job of programming a 3D Pong Game in Java. I can see the holograms, but my mind reels at the work that had to go into writing that program. Writing a Pong game is easy. But, keeping the 3D image in tact at the same time boggles the mind.

The only way that you can play it is if you can see the hologram. Here's a hint. To beat the computer, you must hit a glancing blow off one side of the paddle, so that the ball goes into one of the two top corners at a sharp angle. It requires no mouse clicks to move the paddle - just left and right mouse movements.

Here's the URL for the instructions. The link to the actual game is on that page.

ENJOY!

That is so cool! But I can only play for so long before I get eyestrain...but it IS fun (and better than the original Pong!)

Thanks!

Bummer. Seems to be a bad link. Mozilla says www.pong2001.net could not be found.

Arrrgghhh, I have never been able to see these things.

I have always thought that these things were a giant practical joke. I have never been able to see any thing but swirls of colors.

But then I usually don't see optical illusions of any sort.

For those that can see it I am sure that it is lovely.

Ok, after a couple of hours and playing with it on my Photoshop (sharping the image), I can finally see it. The two dots on the bottom do help when you know how to use them (view until three dots appear with the middle one being the most prominate).

Neat Stuff, needs sharping up though.

A truly amazing thing just happened. My wife, who has tried to see these things for years, just saw this one.

The trick that finally led her to see it was when I drew a vertical line through the dot on the right and a horizontal line through the dot on the left. When the two dots become three (it will go from two to four to three), the center dot will have a plus sign in it, since the left and right dots appear to overlap. Here is how the dots appear at different viewing depths.

Your gaze is not deep enough (4 dots - 2 horizontal followed by 2 vertical):

    --    --    |    |

Your gaze is too deep (4 dots - horizontal, vertical, horizontal, vertical):

    --          |      --          |

Your gaze is the right depth (3 dots - horizontal, plus sign, vertical and the center "plus" dot is in sharp focus):

    --          +          |

When the plus appears in the center dot, wait until the vertical line stabilizes (stops drifting from left to right), before trying to move your gaze upward. My wife tells me that this method and this description is what worked for her. In the few minutes since she saw this one, she has seen three others that she had not been able to see before. Without the lines, she still has trouble getting started. But, once she can see one, she can easily see others, that are designed at the same depth, as long as not too much time elapses between them. However, when I gave her one designed to have a deeper view, she had to go back to the lines again.

I hope that this helps.
