A FreeRepublic Hologram

Here's a little diddy that we at ActionAmerica.org worked up for all you FReepers out there. I hope that you enjoy it. It's a plain paper hologram, also referred to as a stereogram. I chose a red, white and blue background for obvious reasons. An explanation, with download and print instructions follows.

The image is copyrighted, but all that I require is that if you wish to make copies to pass on to others via email or to post it on your web site, you must retain the copyright notice near the upper right corner of the image and place a notice of this requirement in the email or on the web page, where it appears. Though not required, I would appreciate a FReepMail, if you should post it to a web page.

The image that you see on this page is reduced in size, to allow it to fit in your browser window, without having to resize that window. In fact, if you don't have a Mac, that generally uses wider screens or a PC with a giant screen, set to a high resolution, the full size image won't all fit on your screen at 100%, anyway. But, that shouldn't matter, for two reasons.

First, you can see the hologram, just as it is presented on this page. Second, if you want to see the larger image or print it, the underlying, full size image is actually present. All you have to do is click on the image and save it to your disk and what you will have, can be displayed in Preview, at appropriate magnification for your monitor or printed on an 8-1/2 x 11 piece of paper in landscape mode, without any loss of resolution. It is sized to take up most of a letter size page. The file is just over 300KB.

If you are familiar with these holograms, you can skip over the rest of this text and go straight to the image. If not, then here is how you view it. The trick is to focus each eye, individually, on the screen (paper), but have the gaze of both eyes meet at a point about 4 inches behind the screen (paper). The result is that each eye is focusing on a different point on the screen (paper). If that explanation does not make sense, there is a diagram following the hologram, that shows what I am talking about. This hologram is optimized for viewing at about 20 inches. In other words, that's where you should be able to get your initial focus locked on, best. Once you see the image, you will find that you can see it at quite a range of distances.

To help you focus, I have included 2 yellow dots at the bottom of the image. When you are focused properly, they will appear to be 3 (not 2) equally spaced dots and the middle dot will be crystal clear. When that middle dot is sharp, just follow the background up and the hollogram should be in focus. Here's a hint. Immediately under the copyright box is the letter "E" in the word "FREE". Further, a hint image, that shows what you should be looking for, follows the diagram, so if you don't want to see the hint, don't scroll past the bottom of the diagram, until you are ready to look at it.

Enjoy!

Here is the hint image. It's what is hidden in all that mess.

Keep on FReepin'.

I thought the same when I first saw it. To prove it, I loaded the image as a bitmap into a paint program (try it yourself - save the image as a .bmp file and open it in Paint) and used the program to calculate the colours. Both squares had identical colour mappings!

Square a and B are not the same shade of gray.

Move your eye right up to the screen and look at the pixels in B, then do the same for A.

A is not only darker, it is many shades darker.

I can see edges starting to

You have to pause before moving your eyes as your brain starts to "decode" the 3D information being fed to it. As it does the image will become clearer and you can slowly move your eyes upward.

I heard Neal Boortz talking about an optical illusion he'd put up on his website, so I checked it out. Must be a guy thing as it didn't do anything for me.

Yes they are.

Do this -- save the picture as a bmp. Open the image with paint and then copy a small square aeound A and paste into a new picture, then do the same for A and put it next to B in the same new picture.

They are the same!!!

That is so cool. I showed someone in the lab who told me, "No way." So I lassoed and copied and pasted B and dragged it to A in Photoshop.

I copied both blocks into my !Quick Screen Capture and put them side by side. Even erased the letters. The A block is a much darker shade.

Using an eyedropper tool and looking at the color number that it picked up, here are the results:

That's not just close. That's dead on the same.

If you still don't believe it, print it out and fold the paper, so the two squares are next to each other. They're the same.
