Many islands in this region are claimed by several different nations, including Japan, China, Taiwan, Vietnam, and the Philippines. In olden times, whichever nation was stronger had control of the islands. These islands were claimed by Japan at the end of the Sino-Japanese War in 1894 (as was Taiwan, then known as Formosa), but China has tried to reclaim them for years. Note what it said about the activists releasing a monument stating that the islands were territory of China. This is similar to planting a flag and stating that you are annexing a land, whether the other side likes it or not.

That troll was on another thread just seconds before it posted here; it gets around.

Yeah, I went here and found out quite a bit about this subject that I was ignorant of previously. I'd be curious to find out if this site is in line with how you view the situation.

It's called "ICE Case Studies - Diaoyu Islands Dispute". There are no pop-ups or any cookies taken or anything. Check it out.

Japanese warships attack Chinese fishing boats

Shouldn't this headline be...

Japanese spray Chinese fishing boats with water

I think the question marks looked more like water than those things.

I would also surmize that the Chinese "fishing boats" are not just fishing boats

Nawwww - you don't mean like the old Russian spying fishing trawlers do you?

From: www.space.com/missionlaunches/guenter_wendt_011026.html
What officials did worry about was the success of their missions, the safety of their astronauts and the ever-present threat imposed by offshore Russian fishing trawlers that were loaded with a bunch of antennae and never seemed to drop any nets in the water.

"Their presence was ominous," Wendt writes in his memoirs, "The Unbroken Chain," published this month by Apogee Books of Ontario, Canada.

That site is not as impartial as it may appear. Notice they only use the name the Chinese name Diayutai and never even mention the Japanese name Senkaku. Check out the links they have. Every one of them is pro-Chinese anti-Japanese.
