Before You Rush to Judgement; A Rush Bio on MSNBC, Sunday, Jan 18th @ 10pm Eastern
1/13/04

Posted on 01/15/2004 7:09:20 AM PST by harpu

On MSNBC's 'Headliners and Legends' premiere showing this Sunday, 10 p.m. ET, find out how Rush Limbaugh, a college drop-out, makes his way to becoming one of the most famous and influential names in talk radio.

Below are five things you might not have known about the controversial talk show host:

DJ nicknames: His former DJ names, were “Rusty Sharpe” (Rusty was his childhood nickname) and “Jeff Christie.”

Heard around the world: He is remembered to have said, “Compassion is no substitute for justice,” a saying that would later haunt him when it is discovered that he was addicted to painkillers and is accused of obtaining them illegally.

Death threat: Many have been angered by what Limbaugh says on-air. But one day, in the late 1980s, a listener took it too far by coming into Limbaugh's station in a homicidal rage. The guy came through the front door, went past the receptionist, and walked down the radio station hall with a knife. Engineers tackled him before he was able to get into the studio.

Talker almost completely lost hearing: In Oct 2001, Rush was diagnosed with a rare auto-immune disorder that rapidly destroys his hearing. The hearing loss is uncommon and rarely reversed. Before the end of the year, he received cochlear implants, which enable him to hear well again.

Cyber-dater: It is actually in the quiet isolation of cyberspace that Rush meets Marta Fitzgerald, who later became his third wife. Marta, who was initially married when they met, married Rush in 1992. The ceremony takes place at the home of Supreme Court justice Clarence Thomas.

I know Rush isn't a biggie on religion, but one of the tenents of most religions is the process of reconcilliation. I know many marriages are beyond repair, yet scripturally, divorce is only allowed if there is adultry or a non-believer divorces a believer. Otherwise the hope (and according to scripture) is for both to rely on their faith to bring the marriage back together.

Good lord; I'm not one of Rush's fans, but even I know that's not true.

So the amount of press coverage of Rush after the drug charges is the same as before them?

I don't think so.

And I don't care what you think.

For a guy who admitted he doesn't like Rush, you sure are certain about everything about him.

I generally ignore people I don't care for.

I guess the difference between normal people and psychotics is that psychotic people obsess on people they don't care for.

Well, I usually don't think people who post to me on FR are obsessed with me, but we all have our little "issues," don't we?

I did not post to you, you posted to me.

Psychotics must have a hard time keeping their facts straight, with all those lies they have to remember.

Someone's making stuff up again ... there is no way they can document his repeatedly saying this ...

Rush started out his radio career on a liberal platform.

Where'd you hear this? It was Rush's early exposure to political discussions listening to his dad where he got his REAL start with 'political talk' - EVER hear the interview Rush did with his 100 year old grandfather?

DJ nicknames: His former DJ names, were "Rusty Sharpe" (Rusty was his childhood nickname) and "Jeff Christie."

Verified on the latter with some background on the first:

JUST today Rush was relating a prank he pulled on his barber - who called him 'Rusty' ...

Now that's interesting. I didn't know she was married when the started meeting.

Do you perchance know the whole story - was she separated, was her former husband an abuser - I'll admit I don't know, but, let's show some restraint before we cast aspersion about as if we were the press ...

She was still married with young children.

I know of a case where the woman had several kids - and an ever-increasingly abusive hubby! The woman became involved with a friend's brother (while married) when they met at "craft meets" ... long story short they ended up getting married ...

I dated a gal with a couple 'o kiddos whose husband had spent some time in the California penal system (come to find out AFTER dating - this was before they had moved to Tejas and apparently after his release) - at the *time* I dated her she was divorced (of course) ... to make a loooong story short suffice for me to say she was 'messed up' bad in the head ... one of the reasons for divorce was: abuse ...

Do I endorse such courses of action: no, I do not ... but I also don't 'run the world' either ...

Jim, as I stated in my post, I heard this on Rush's radio show a number of years ago when Rush was talking about his eariest first days in radio. If you want to argue, argue with Rush.

_Jim: Unless she was totally dishonest with him about her current marital status (and let's for now assume the story is correct) then what does that say about her?

On the other side of the coin, even if she was seperated, seperation is a time for cooling down and ultimate reconcilliation. Unfortunately, too many people use it as a time to stick their toe in the water of romance. Well gee whiz, suddenly someone is paying more attention to me than hubby did. Isn't that a common theme in dating, putting your best foot forward always. IF he interferred with the reconcilliation process, despite her assurances of no hope, then he was IMHO and I believe by scripture in error.

I don't want to go there, and it's for no particular reason (like skeletons in my closet - I have none).

If you want to talk scripture or canon law - that's another subject.

Just bear in mind that one day, we will all be called to account for our actions and decisions; most people try to do the thing that/make the decision that is best for them and their dependents, and, I'm not going to "Monday morning quarterback" their rationale *when* I know not "thing one" about the circumstances at the time.

If they break a law, bring the matter before a Grand Jury, let the GJ indict them, let the prosecutor charge them, put me on the jury to judge the facts as you try them - that's as far as I'm willing to go ...

, I heard this on Rush's radio show a number of years ago

Then your recollections are in error ...

Simply stating "I heard it" is wholly insufficient if you wish to support that 'recollection' in the face of what a whole host of other people 'recollect' or have written about (thereby leaving a record for later referral) in the past.

HAD THERE BEEN a 'reformation' (literally: a change from liberal to conservative) in his past, I HIGHLY SUSPECT that he would use that a show material on a MORE frequent basis than the purported 'isolated date in history' you claim he 'revealed' this. HE has made just about every *other* phase of his life an 'open' book - why not this 'phase' of his life (please, NO lame arguments here).

Any way, I HIGHLY doubt your recollection; I have caught nearly every Rush program via delayed tape (as opposed to 'live', on-the-fly broadcast WHERE you can on occasion MISS important qualifying words OR an important setup), wearing out in the process one three-motor three-head solenoid operated Dokorder, a box of 7" reel-reel tapes as well as several portable cassette recorders ... arriving home after a long day - I had Rush to listen to at *my* convenience (loooooong before Rush 24/7) ...

I agree, there is a lot that may not be known. But if the story is as it appears, then it is minimally troubling.
