January 15, 2004 -- Mother Nature is threatening to give Al Gore the cold shoulder today when he gives a speech on "global warming" at the Beacon Theater. Accuweather is predicting the temperature will reach a high of a bone-rattling 14 degrees this morning - accompanied by snow and high winds - while Gore blasts the Bush administration's policy on global warming.

"Maybe [the speech] won't apply in New York right now, but Vice President Gore will be highlighting the effects of global warming in different parts of the world," Sabori added.I'd like to see Gore give his talk at Harvard, in front of the camellia that was said to be living proof of global warming a mere 14 months ago.
NY Times Op-ed from November 2002
A Camellia Grows in Boston , By PETER DEL TREDICI [director of living collections at Harvard University's Arnold Arboretum]
[snip]
And finally there's Camellia "Winter's Star," which has survived the past four winters in our outdoor nursery. It's the first camellia ever to make it out onto the grounds, and it's in full bloom right now. What's curious about all these observations is my personal reaction to them. At first there is a flush of pride, and even triumph, at being able to accomplish something that hasn't been done before. This is the gardener in me. But then comes the letdown when I realize that I am staring at hard evidence that our climate today is not the same as it was when the arboretum was founded. What should be a horticultural triumph turns out to be a hollow victory one that has less to do with skill than it does with a changing climate (and, I imagine, America's love of fossil fuel).
I hope someone bothered to keep the camellia snug.

Gore is calling for a recount on the temperature. Accuweather is owned and run by rightwing Republican conservatives, lawsuit to follow.

I hope someone bothered to keep the camellia snug.No matter. If the camellia dies, that can be "hard evidence" of global warming, too.

Why would someone schedule a speech on global warming in the dead of winter? What was he thinking? geesh.
It is currently 10 degrees with a wind chill of -5 in Brooklyn. Way to go, Al.

Hey wait, Algore might be right. The temp is going all the way up to 31 on Saturday.

"We don't control the environment," said Lisa Sabori, a public-relations official for MoveOn.org, the group sponsoring the event. Exactly! Now that they see reality (humans are not the cause of weather), maybe moveon.org will move on to some other non-problem...

No matter. If the camellia dies, that can be "hard evidence" of global warming, too. You're right of course. I hadn't considered that.

Two kinds of camellias: some bloom in the winter; some bloom in the spring. I have a red one that ALWAYS blooms in December.

""We don't control the environment," said Lisa Sabori, a public-relations official for MoveOn.org"
Wow the hate group is confused. I thought the AlGore speech was we are all controlling the enviroment and we're all gonna die.

Algore is giving Saturday Night Live a run for the money when he rants about "global warming" on a freezing Janurary morning in Boston - brought to you by the nuts infamous for the "Hitler Is Bush" commercial.

A man on the street's reaction is recorded when he's asked about al Gore's speech on global warming.

* Former President Bill Clinton yesterday insisted he isn't favoring Gen. Wesley Clark over the rest of the Democrats running for the White House. Speaking at an event marking the completion of an initiative to lower prices for AIDS testing in Africa and the Caribbean, Clinton said that while he has a lot of supporters involved in Clark campaign, he denied that Clark was his guy.
HE has a "a lot of supporters"? Supporters for what? Is it typical for someone who is not running (ostensibly) for anything to speak in terms of "having supporters"?
Typical, though, for him to hedge his bets and not publicly commit until an outcome that he can turn into some kind of self-promotion is clear.
