WASHINGTON, Jan. 13 (UPI) -- Rep. Dick Gephardt's vision of U.S. foreign policy involves using U.S. leadership to "build a strong global economy," he said in a speech in New York.
Gephardt, D-Mo., is contesting the lead in Monday's Iowa caucuses with former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean.
He told the Council on Foreign Relations if elected president, he would "build a strong global economy through American leadership" and "expand economic growth and development through a progressive trade policy that advances an international minimum wage to raise the standard of living around the world and make trade work for both developed and developing nations."
"America stands for ... something more than the reckless unilateralism of this administration," Gephardt said. "We are still the world's capital of freedom ... We must reach out to these people, not push them away. ... We must join forces with nations to build a better global community for all, and in so doing isolate the terrorists and the autocrats -- not our own beloved nation."

"expand economic growth and development through a progressive trade policy that advances an international minimum wage to raise the standard of living around the world I thought we weren't supposed to interfere with other countries.
That said, the fact that he thinks he can control wages in the world's dictatorships proves he's a maroon.

A strong economy (global or otherwise) cannot be created by a central planner determining appropriate wages for the workers.
If such a thing were possible, we'd be speaking Russian, tovarich.

a progressive trade policy that advances an international minimum wage In other words, he would outlaw poor people from working unless they could find someone willing to pay them an unrealistic amount.
