You hear it in the coffee shops all over the "red areas" of the map. Everyone knows that is where the real politics is discussed in America. Conservatives are asking themselves, "What was the President thinking?" They might be talking about No Child Left Behind, or steel tariffs or the signing of many less than conservative bills.

In the coffee shops in the "blue areas," liberals don't sit around much. They are too angry and busy to stop for a while but many are thinking that President Bush is the most conservative president in years, since "oh, my God, Reagan," and he must be stopped.

Both of these assessments cannot be true and after spending years looking at politics, I took my first serious stand on a candidate in 1968 at the tender age of 9, if both sides are mad at you, you are probably on the right track. So why should conservatives and moderates support the President, now on issues and later this year at the ballot box?

Based on the history of this President, we better not count him out till we see how things unfold. He is what conservatives asked for in a President. He cut taxes, got our economy going again and lives and breathes the safety of this country and the people in it. When it is all said and done, George W. Bush does what he believes is right for the American people and he is willing to stand on his record in November.

I haven't really read this thread, but I'll pipe up anyway...I have ten minutes while I'm waiting for a phone call anyhow.

Do I agree with the President on everything? No, I certainly don't.

Do I support his reelection? Absolutely.

I choose not to dwell right now on the areas of disagreement. There is too much that needs to be done to allow these things to distract or divert us.

Fact is, he is the nominee of my party. We still live in a two-party system, and the alternative is too wretched to contemplate.

So, I choose to devote my time, my energy and my money to the places where I can actually impact this thing:

Senate races. The makeup of the U.S. Senate next year is going to determine the makeup of the U.S. Supreme Court for decades to come. We can pick up a number of seats if we work hard. The numbers and the politics favor us.

Congressional races. We have the opportunity to pick up a very large number of new seats, and there is absolutely no reason that a ton of them cannot be real conservatives, if we all work now in the primaries to make it so.

GOP Party politics. In this arena, the victory goes to those who show up. Every conservative needs to devote themselves to electing like-minded people to party positions, choosing strong delegates to the state and national conventions, and to keeping the platform pro-life and conservative.

Keeping the heat on our elected officials. ....which of course is a job that never ends, unfortunately.

I will give you that except his look at the world stopped when the Berlin wall came down. He has advocated US withdrawal from the world since the end of the cold war. What he and many others are failing to see that within 30 years we will be in a similar gold war situation with the EU. The EU is NOT an economic alliance it is a confederation to challenge US dominance and influence both economic and military. The United States cannot sit by and end up in that situation and still be fighting Middle Eastern terrorism. The EU also has its eye on the oil deposits in the Middle East and they will need them to make their grand designs become a reality. Pat ended his perception of world history in 1989.

President Bush's immigration policy is pure genius. Illegal workers who are already in the U.S. can accept his plea bargain, register themselves, pay a fine, register their families and their employers with the federal government, and in return they get a 3 year work visa.

Then, after investing 3 years of their lives in this work program, they have to deport themselves back to their home country in order to apply for a blue card extension, green card, or re-entry permit.

If they don't self-deport, then we know where they live because they are registered (something that prior to Bush's plan they were not). We know who their employer was so we can apply pressure there, too. Plus, they lose the taxes that they paid in to our system (some of which are refundable to them if they play by Bush's rules and self-deport). Moreover, after registering, their employers have to pay U.S. wages and payroll taxes.

So in 3 years we don't have to bring in the military to round up 8 million people in some vast chain gang march back to Mexico. Nope, now they have to deport themselves or else risk losing their paid in taxes, their chance to ever be legal in the U.S., as well as lose their job (because the new change that makes this different from the past is that Bush is registering these illegals so that we finally know where they are living and working).

At this time in history yes. It appears you are not quite an "ex-Canadian" yet. Are you now a citizen of this meddlesome country and if so why did you bother?

It's all about "sending a message", and "I will not be ignored"! And the "punishment" of Bush. It gets the adreneline flowing, the fight, and feeling victimized by policies they disagree with...

...But, in the end, they actually get nothing but a few weeks of stories on how they, little-ol-they, the vaunted base, got back at Bush!

And watching the swearing in of President Dean/Clark, they know the country is safe, for they still have their conservative principles in tact.

This is not a good analogy. In fact, I don't even know why you brought this up. But while we're at it let me say I support the US protecting US interest abroad. That does not involve handing ANY aid of any kind to any govt. What we need to do is the proverbial "walk softly and carry a big stick". The world already knows if we put our sites on them, we can kick their ass all day long and barely break a sweat.

As for the Jihadist, immigration policy is within the purview of the federal govt. Were it me, I would change the policy to Muslim need not apply. I feel sorry for the good Muslims out there but quite frankly we cannot separate the wheat from the chaff so we need to error on the side of the American people. But this does no good if we are unwilling to seal the border to the south which your beloved 2 party system is too inbred with other interest to do anything about.
