…They Asked for His Kind of Leadership

You hear it in the coffee shops all over the "red areas" of the map. Everyone knows that is where the real politics is discussed in America. Conservatives are asking themselves, "What was the President thinking?" They might be talking about No Child Left Behind, or steel tariffs or the signing of many less than conservative bills.

In the coffee shops in the "blue areas," liberals don't sit around much. They are too angry and busy to stop for a while but many are thinking that President Bush is the most conservative president in years, since "oh, my God, Reagan," and he must be stopped.

Both of these assessments cannot be true and after spending years looking at politics, I took my first serious stand on a candidate in 1968 at the tender age of 9, if both sides are mad at you, you are probably on the right track. So why should conservatives and moderates support the President, now on issues and later this year at the ballot box?

Based on the history of this President, we better not count him out till we see how things unfold. He is what conservatives asked for in a President. He cut taxes, got our economy going again and lives and breathes the safety of this country and the people in it. When it is all said and done, George W. Bush does what he believes is right for the American people and he is willing to stand on his record in November.

I don't choose a candidate because he is the better of two crappy choices. I vote for a candidate because he represents the majority of my views.

My point is that as part of Reagan’s deal with the Rats in 1986 the borders were suppose to close to all except legal immigrants. Now neither the Republicans or the Demorats want to close the border. But at least the LP has the b@lls to say what they believe, unlike the Republicans and Demorats. I can respect them for that, unlike the Rats who will say one thing and do another.

Interestingly enough best statement concerning illegal immigration came from Sony Bono during a debate. His simple answer was its illegal enforce the law. That’s how I feel (or if we are not going to enforce the current law (lets not pretend we do) scrap it and write something we will enforce) .

Just so. I don't think the real line is between neo-cons and "paleos." I think the real line is between serious national defence conservatives in the Reagan tradition, and Clinton-era conservatives who spent the post-Soviet nineties spitting and fuming and getting glassy-eyed about their own little issues, and can't adjust to the fact that there are now real life-or-death issues on our national plate again.

Besides, they don't have anybody to support. Do they support Democrats? That would be a dead giveaway (like Arator, over on the TOS site, who proudly supports Muja-Howard-Dean) as to their propensities. And third parties are a complete disaster.

So, with nothing but "anti-Bush" fervor, they'll largely dissipate in terms of serious discussion.

Don't worry about them. They're as small a minority and make about as much noise as the 'war-is-not-the-answer-yardsign' crowd. That's why they're so noisy. Most of America is watching 'Survivor' and tuning politics out. There is no Pubbie primary, so by time people start to pay attention, the big money advertisements will drown the neer-do-wells out as they always do.

They just don't get that the ONLY issue for at least the next 10 years is 9/11 and what we're going to do about it. Everything else is unimportant. That's what burns them, most of America sees their pet passions as beside the point

Not childish at all. Just willing to wait it out and not be so impatient that I have to vote for somebody, anybody, just so I can say I voted for 'our' guy. Who's the one being childish? Someone willing to wait? Or someone that impatiently has to do something, knowing full well that their previous and future votes will not continue to do anything simply because those in charge know they can always count on those votes.

Bush is doing his damndest to alienate his base

You know, I'm getting tired of posting this, but I'm sick to death of hearing about Bush alienating his base. It's a lie.

The first result is that the Republican Party is more unified than ever before. Ninety-one percent of Republicans approve of the job President Bush is doing. In 1992, Bush's father didn't have anything like that level of support, and even the Reagan administration was split between so-called pragmatists and ideologues.

Today's Republicans not only like Bush personally, they also overwhelmingly support his policies. According to a Pew Center study, 85 percent of Republicans support the war in Iraq, 82 percent believe that pre-emptive war is justified, and 72 percent believe the U.S. is justified in holding terror suspects without trial.

His "base" is with him.
