Just so. I don't think the real line is between neo-cons and "paleos." I think the real line is between serious national defence conservatives in the Reagan tradition, and Clinton-era conservatives who spent the post-Soviet nineties spitting and fuming and getting glassy-eyed about their own little issues, and can't adjust to the fact that there are now real life-or-death issues on our national plate again.

In my opinion, the fight is between traditional conservatives and populists that think they are conservatives. The Reagan democrats have mostly become “conservatives” because of social and defense issues but retain their loyalty to unions, protectionism and isolationism ala Pat Buchannan..
